Yeah, there will always be reasons a coach would decline an offer, but nothing lost to ask. At least determine if there is any interest.

Sure sometimes a school hits on a Billy Donovan. But look at how those up and coming young coaches ( see taking mid level team to the Dance a c time or two and upsetting a highly rated team) have fared in the SEC. Auburn, Bama, Arkansas, Georgia, Kentucky, South Carolina, Texas A&M have all experienced disappointment taking this path, some more than once. For all the criticism heaped on John Brady at least he recruited 3 SEC championship teams, coached 2 of them to titles and went to the Final Four. None of these other coaches of the schools I mentioned including the Gillespie years at Kentucky came even close to him.

I live in Vegas now and a friend who hosts a show on espn radio said Shaka is actually open to looking around, and that he and Ben Howland are on the short list for UNLV if (when) Dave Rice leaves for South Florida.

I find it hard to believe he would turn down NC State, Illinois, UCLA, and now Marquette, to end up at UNLV. He's not from out west either. I think he is from Illinois.
I know VCU won't be able to keep him forever, but I would think it would have to be a Big 10 or ACC job.

I think Les Miles could run both programs. Frank Wilson and Johnny Jones could be his recruiting guys for each program.

If that doesn't work, I would get on the phone and call (in order):

1. Gene Hackman, if he is ready to step up from Indiana high school coaching
2. Dennis Hopper, think he is ready to lead a team
3. Ronald Reagan
4. Darth Vader

(dumb questions deserve dumb answers)

Why not. Hell the melt by the Miles haters would make it worth it. Plus he has already recruited a 1st rounder in 2 different sports.

I'm inclined to agree with you, and Smart is actually from Wisconsin which should make the Marquette thing even more telling, but its been a year since he turned down UCLA, even longer for the other two, and he might be coming to terms with the limitations of Richmond at this point.

I dont know why he'd say no to Marquette and yes to UNLV, other than the fact that one is in fricking Milwaukee, but, IMO, theres no reason on earth why UNLV cant be a perennial top 5 program again. it's like looking back at us in football in the 80's, you can just see it, everything is there, everything is in place for a good coach to win big, quickly.

(all that being said i think it'll be Howland)

Coach Ken Reeves has done a great job at Carver High School. He's ready for a move up.

Or maybe Caoch Norman Dale if he brings Shooter with him

Call me crazy, but I think he can win a title at VCU, but I agree we won't keep him forever. Just think it would take an elite Big 10 or ACC team to pry him from us.
