What does "ranked team" mean this season?

Outside of Alabama, Clemson, and Ohio St it means nothing.
Iowa State and Kansas State are pretty good.

Miss State and Mizzou are terrible.

That’s what it means.

24/7 Sports ranks State and Mizzou's rosters well ahead of Iowa State and way ahead of Kansas State.

This is actual bs. He's gotten all the credit and blame. He brought in Brady and burrow and had the best season ever. But he's also failed on 2 coordinator hires and had one of the worst classes in the past 15 years or so and it's showing.

I think it’s more that some think O deserves a lifetime pass for one great season.

O has had a tending upwards since he took over. Last year was just when everything came together, he doesn’t deserve a lifetime pass, but he deserves some leniency for this year, we literally have an entire different team. And we showed improvement last week.

these fans are as bad as the ones who mention O being fired or in the hot seat after 3 games removed from greatest season ever

Of course he deserves some slack this year but the Gene Chizik 2.0 comparisons will continue until he turns it around.

I doubt it against a bad Auburn team since he has already had two really bad losses.

correct. Building a consistently elite program is far different than one spectacular year.

Does Cam and Gus = Burrow and Brady? We don't know yet. But those two horrific losses to two terrible teams is very, very bad.

His first two seasons were really no better than Miles' final seasons. Miles won 8 (reg season) games in 2014. Would have been 9 wins in 2015 but for the McNeese game being canceled. Miles pissed away what should have been a win vs. Bama in 2014. Then the series really started to get away from LSU (in terms of competitiveness) in 2015. O won 9 regular season games in both 17 and 18. He was no closer to beating Alabama in those years than Miles was in his final years.

The Brady hire (which brought with it a complete philosophy change on offense) changed everything and the stars aligned for 2019. Contrary to your OP, Orgeron received a TON of credit even though, realistically, the biggest impact was Brady.

Most LSU fan knew and accepted that a lot would be lost from that 2019 team. Both players and coaches. But O had earned the benefit of the doubt that he could hire a new set of great coordinators which is 100% necessary to any success O has as a HC. Yet, at a time when the "demand" to work at LSU may have never been higher...O hired two washed up guys with little to no market at all. More than that, he paid his DC almost the same amount as the prior DC despite the new DC having nothing close to the market demand for the old DC. 4 games in that decision is looking disasterous

I would imagine even the most optimistic LSU fan did not EXPECT national championship contender this year. But I don't think any fans were hoping that the program would go back to what it was under Miles (and to some extent Saban) whereby LSU was always good, with an occasional great year. The hope was that 2019 was the start of LSU being a perennial championship contender. Four games in to 2020 LSU has been shredded (on defense) twice by two teams even a lesser (relative to 2019) LSU team should beat.

If you told fans before the year that LSU would go 8-2, 7-3, with losses to some in the group of: Auburn, Alabama, Florida, A&M, no one would have been "happy", but they would have accepted it. But losing to fairly weak Miss. St and Mizzou teams isn't something fans were ok to accept. THAT'S why O is getting the heat...deservedly so.

That said, he still has a chance to turn it ALL around starting this weekend. Outside of Arkansas and Ole Miss, there are no more teams on the schedule LSU "should" beat. If he can find a way to run through the rest of the season with 5 more wins...then much of the start will be fogotten.

Credit for what? Hiring people who could actually coach and having a once in 20 year talent at QB?

So you don't give him credit for identifying the problem at the QB position and bringing in that "20 year talent at QB" instead of awarding that scholarship to a lower rated recruit?

Coach o can’t coach either side of the ball

What does this has to do with being a Head Coach? Ask that guy at Texas how's things working out for him.

Just repeat that a few times and ask yourself if he deserves to be a coach at a program like LSU

2019 should have answered this question for you. The first road to recovery is admittance.

quote:

And he sure as hell isnt some master CEO type of coach who is a savant

So he played the Master CEO type to a perfect season, he identified Joe Brady and brought him in, he identified the need to get a capable QB and bring him in and that QB just happened to have the Greatest Ever Season, He pulled off the Greatest Season in SEC HISTORY. Yet in YOUR MIND, he is not a Master CEO type. I think you don't know the role of a CEO.

When something bad happens it’s always “it’s start at the top.” But when we bring in a great transfer QB or a guy like Joe Brady. It’s just like those things just happened to happen. When we steal Arik Gilbert from out of state, it’s just luck I guess, but when we lose a recruit from Louisiana it’s bc “something is going on in the locker room”

My position is this: O won a national championship. He fixed problems in the past, he should be able to fix them again. He seems to be acting with a sense of urgency. He has earned some trust and patience from the fan base.

look, O gets credit for 2019.

But the question is whether 2019 was just a one-off year where the stars aligned, or whether it's the beginning of a sustained program of excellence where we're in the hunt for championships most years.

So O gets full credit for bringing in Burrow and Brady. But if that was just a one-shot deal for a year, and then O reverts back to 9-3 type seasons (not even counting this year, which is looking bad), then O deserves to feel some heat.

Again, the Gene Chizik comparison is a fair question to ask. He caught lightning in a bottle with Cam and Gus for a year, and then didn't sustain that. I'm not saying that's what happening here, but it's not unreasonable to ask the question.

Thank you, the problem with some people is the act like 2019 didn't happen.

I agree with this.

Difference in the comparison is that once Cam left Chizik was toast, Myles Brennan started the year on a record pace for any starting LSU QB. Then Brennan gets injured and here comes TJ Finley, and the kid looks remarkable in his first start. Auburn didn't have anything close to capable QB after Cam left. Therein lies the difference IMO.

well the problems were of his own making.

Aranda was already here, so O doesn't really get much credit for that.

His Pelini hire looks terrible, at this point.

The Matt Canada Hire was terrible.

The Ensminger promotion to OC in 2018 wasn't good (we had Burrow and a ton of other offensive talent, and the offense wasn't good in '18).

The Brady hire was spectacular.

The Linehan hire is still TBD, but the offense is playing well, although 3rd down conversions and red zone efficiency aren't good.

So overall, O has a poor history hiring coordinators.

I've already acknowledged, numerous times, that O gets full credit for 2019.

I'm just looking at the facts regarding all of his coordinator, not just Brady.

Baseball metaphor for our coaching hires

Canada: blind swing thinking it’s a fastball without knowing the pitcher throws a change up. Uneducated risk. shite results.

E: chocking up in the bad and just worrying about making contact. Safe pick. Safe results

Brady: betting a ace pitcher’s breaking ball isn’t going to hang, putting everything into that swing and rocking it. Educated risk that paid off huge.

Linehan: sac hunt to try and move the runners you already have on base over. Safe. Effective. Not the highest percentage play.

Canada didn't work bc he was either forced to hire him bc of the stipulation he had to hire the best coordinators even if it wasn't the offense O envisioned. He and O butted heads and Canada was a POS and O was able to get rid of him. I don't think we win a title with Canada as our OC.

E hasn't been a bad hire

Pelini the jury is still out
