Saw him one time at Walk Ons. Easily pushing 300 lbs and wearing a giant gold necklace of himself. Glad he lost all that weight.

I think he’s definitely Top 5. He’s in the top 3 that I’ve seen play at LSU. I didn’t see Bert Jones or YA Tittle play, but I would think most people would have Burrow, Hodson, Russell, Jones and Tittle in their top 5.

We need to show that guy more love than we have.

Time to bring him back and say thank you.

Fantastic article. The Stephen A Smiff video is funny AF. Look, as an LSU fan JRock gave me nothing but pleasure as a spectator. I remember as a TF in warmups prior to games and barely flicking his wrists and whipping the ball out 60 yards. I knew he'd be special, unfortunately the purple drank and ego got the best of him. Add in some shady handlers, it could have undone many. That being said, he pissed away a dream contract.

As a young kid at the time, JaMarcus Russell was the first LSU football player, who was my favorite player. I’ll never forget getting a purple number 4 jersey in 2005 for my birthday, and then the following year, getting a white number 2 jersey for my birthday in 2006, along with an autographed football from the 2006 team. When I saw that football, my eyes started scrambling all over the football, looking for a signature with the number 2 next to it. Those sure were the days.

Hate it didn’t workout for him in the NFL, but man was that dude fun to watch in 2005 and 2006. That big ole arm he had, he sure could sling a football around. Hate to see that much talent go to waste.

Top 5? He only had 1 good season. Burrow had 1 good season then 1 great/unmatched all time season.

Top 3 in my opinion. He stuck it out for four years through a head coaching change, and absolutely excelled in 2006 under Jimbo Fisher. This with Miles beginning to exert (for better or worse or at the time) his offensive philosophy on the team.

While he was absolutely deserving of the #1 pick, thru no fault of anyone but himself he absolutely shite the bed in the NFL. Regardless, he was amazing in the latter half of the 2006 season. The best I have seen at LSU up until Burrow in '19.

My favorite Russell moment was in his RS season of '03. The team was warming up before the BCS game against OU and he was kneeling on the goal line and throwing frozen ropes to Bowe who was standing on the 45. Early Doucet was a high school senior standing next to me in the stands wearing his St Martinville letterman's jacket and his eyes were the size of saucers.

He was a force as qb. Big, fairly mobile and he could throw it out the stadium. He was accurate too his 3rd year.

I think Jimbo fisher was the reason he was able to keep it together at LSU and perform.

I think Jimbo is somewhat overrated as a head coach, but he was a damn good OC. Especially when you consider his time here was in a run first system in a run dominated SEC.

I was honest with the coaches about what was going on, and they knew me as a person, so they handled it quietly. I did my punishment, which was not attending the bowl game

Man this sparked a legendary Rant thread/ argument just before that Peach Bowl. Some "insider" said Jamarcus was suspended because of grades. Turns out he was partially right.

Found that stuff about jimbo very interesting and shows just how much these coaches can influence these guys for better or worse.

You have someone like jimbo investing in these kids and Jamarcus keeps his head on relatively straight. Then gets to a dysfunctional organization who’s coaches don’t care one bit about molding men and he falls completely off the wagon.

I never got why no one ever gave him another shot. Even Ryan leaf got a second team to take a flyer

No idea how true but one story was Saban considered benching him for his inability to make the proper reads / progressions. Even on dump off completions the coaches were livid he didn’t see the reviver breaking free on the post pattern. Might be the ultimate case study of a rookie that had no business holding out of training camp posturing for a bigger contract. He needed to be in there learning the playbook. I wish him well.

Where do you get 60 million from? He only made about half of that. Should still have more but don’t overexagerate

He got it from Sam Bradford, as was clearly discussed before your post. It was actually $78 with $50 guaranteed. definitely the reason for rookie salary caps, but most erroneously think it was J Russell.

Yes. Super sad.

Needed a role model and life coach right by his side. Tough read.

Ran in to Jamarcus at the National Championship game and he was super humble and cool. My wife talked to him a bit. Small/fun talk.

It appears he never had a chance. He was always going to go the way it went . Never had enough good role models to get him ove the hump. Never believed in hisself enough to overcome the squalor. The excuses are just that, excuses. He could’ve had it all if he had just manned up. Very sad . One of my fav Tigers ever . Great read.
