The word on the street is that Orgeron wants the LSU DLine gig very bad (more so than any other job out there including his current one), and is merely awaiting the phone call from The Hat. It is not known whether Miles wants Orgeron or not, but if the offer is made then Coach O will likely be a Tiger.
It makes sense that Miles hasn't called him yet, though, as Miles is meeting with Chavis later this week to "interview" him and probably offer him the DC spot. It would be foolish to offer the D-line coaching spot or even speak to a D-line candidate before hiring your defensive coordinator. I'm sure Miles wants to talk with Chavis first about bringing Orgeron onto the staff (if in fact Miles wants to bring Orgeron onto the staff, which he may very well not want to begin with ... that is the only unknown at this point from what I gather).
But make no mistake, Orgeron wants the LSU job and will jump at any offer from LSU.

Coach Miles better have made that call by now IMO
Get Coach O all over Rueben Randle!

Not necessarily true.

Orgeron was doing his job at Ole Miss ... his job was to get the best recruits to go to Ole Miss, keep the recruits he couldn't get away from LSU/Auburn/Alabama, and do everything he could do to win games and get Ole Miss back towards the top in the SEC West standings.
He got everything right but the last part. He was doing his job, and hopefully he'll do an even better job at LSU since his "heart" is here.
To answer your question, though, Orgeron is a helluva defensive line coach, one of the top recruiters in the country, and a "in your face" guy on the sidelines which is something LSU severely lacked this year ... leadership on the defensive side of the ball and someone to "light a fire" under their arse. He is an absolute perfect fit for what LSU needs right now on the defensive side of the ball ... where O struggles is in the play-calling/game management side of things and that's why you get Chavis to run the defense but let O be the on-the-field rah-rah guy.

I know people have this fascination with O but why? After the way he trash talked LSU to recruits (Joe McKnight) as well as others. The way he went out of his way to harm LSU recruiting. His avowed allegiance to USCw and Pete Carrol. I am sure he and Les crossed recruiting swords more than once. Maybe that kind of stuff can be overlooked I don't know. Just glad it is Miles and not me making the decisions.
Being nice doesn't cut it!
We need some cut throat people on staff to give us the edge

Les has been given an open checkbook there's no excuse for not making a big time hire
I remember when Holtz took over SC. He said "I would have offered my firstborn to get John Chavis, if I thought that would get him here."
Chavis is a great DC of extremely high character. Would be an amazing catch.
Can you imagine how good our LB's would look?
Jesus, the NFL talent this guy has churned out boggles the mind.
Reggie White, Albert Haynesworth, John Henderson. . .and that's just the line.

Spoke to a friend of mine who is from Knoxville and his opinion is that Chavis would be a great DC, but the downside is he doesn't recruit. I don't know if that is true or not, or if it matters much.

Chavis runs a soft cover Mustang defense. No better than what we have now.
No chance that Coach O is offered. The new pres and Chancellor would not allow this clown to further diminish what we are already saddled with!

That's why you bring in Coach O with him ... let the DC coordinate and do his job and let Coach O go out and get the horses.
Chavis without Orgeron is a so-so hire in my opinion. But bring them in together and it's a grandslam hire in my opinion.

Chuck Smith (although I can't stand him) wasn't too shabby either.

These maggots don't know any more than any one else. Their best DC is strictly their opinion. They don't know shite.

That's exactly why I asked that. He has filled the boards with negative posts about Chavis, but has not once mentioned who he thinks would be a good choice.
Just look at his post history; freakin' broken record.

go to the coaching discussion board and look at the list of possibilities, almost all of them other than bumpas would be superior to chavis

He called you out to offer an opinion.
Are you afraid to throw it out there?
