And LSU is top 12 or so without the Texas game, what's your point?

My point is that including their worst game, they were ranked as high as we were excluding our worst game (and the Vandy TDS)

I think he most important defensive star is defensive SP+ which considers many different Things and is an advanced metric which accounts for when backups are in, when game is out of hand, etc, has bama 11 and LSU 36 I believe. Wish I had the link. People think this bama defense is bad but they are still a top 10 defense. We are getting there.

LSU had a better defensive rating in 2018 than Bama did, which no one here would believe if you told them.

Most of the S&P+ sites don't even have numbers out yet because the sample size is too small.

I guess it's too bad they all count then.

Well if they all count we are much worse than that defense

and they didn't win a championship

If you take out both of our worst games they were better last year

if you leave in both of out worst games, they were better last year

SO far at least.

I wouldn't call giving up 3 PPG more "much" worse. To each their own though.

They won't win NC unless this defense improves a lot.

Found an interesting article on the topic. This obviously eliminates the last 7 champions but it looks like (at the time) 2010 Auburn was the only defense ranked lower than LSU's defense is ranked now to win a national title since 1970.

2010 Auburn defense was ranked 60th, but nobody could stop Cam and that offense.

Coincidentally, Auburn got back to the Championship game in 2013 with the 87th ranked defense.

A portion of the fan base is sky screaming about LSU's defense, and it's blown way out of proportion.
it's actually not blown out of proportion. Florida isn't regarded as an offensive juggernaut, and they rolled up 450+ yards, with six (!) drives of 70+ yards.

Texas gained 500+ yards of offense, and Vandy had 3 60+ yard TD drives.

Look, we're winning big games, but failing to acknowledge an issue on defense is reckless. Now, our defensive issues may not be fatal this year, but they're an issue. Particularly with Bama and (assuming we win that one), UGA on the horizon, and then elite offenses of the playoff teams.

Here ya go

(cynically spoken) Yea, that list is a good indication of who has the best defense.
Navy defense is better than bama?
Buffalo and Air Force defense better than LSU?
I don't think Wisconsin has a defense that can throttle LSU and I don't think they have an offense that can keep up with LSU.
I do believe LSU's defense needs to improve before the bama game. And they will. Our front 4 were 5 tenths of a second away from several sacks against Fla. And Fla. oline was getting away with a lot of holding, particularly on Shelvin. And one was while their QB was in the endzone, should have been called giving them a safety. Our DB's will get better and start covering the receivers tighter. Shelvin was a fricking beast in that game. Fla. oline couldn't keep him out the backfield. Sacks are going to start coming.

They're a top 25-30 unit and this board repeatedly talks about how terrible they are.

That's the definition of blowing something out of proportion.

The defense isn't elite, and it isn't even great. It is good though. The sooner you people accept that, the happier you'll all be.

Also, including UGA in the list of teams that are an offensive threat is laughable.

It may be good enough, but we'll have VERY tough games remaining, and I'd prefer our defense improves so we have more margin for error.

I'm not insinuating that UGA has an elite offense, although they do have excellent skill position players. I'm just saying they're a top 12 defense, so I don't know if we'll put up 50 points on them. Maybe we will, but they're a very talented team.

Mizzou is #6! Mizzou, Georgia and Florida outperform LSU defensively.

I can't believe Mizzou is now a DEFENSIVE powerhouse. Last year they couldn't stop a slug caught up in a shower of salt.

And Bama has played a significantly weaker schedule than us. So has Auburn.

Auburn won without a defense. Cam was their whole team.

Following Caterpillar's link on the 3rd post, Auburn 2010 was 60th and buoyed by a Heisman-winning quarterback leading a breakout year for a spread offense.

It's certainly an anomaly--Ohio State is the next lowest in the last 10 years, at a "measly" 19th. Most teams have a top-10 defense and a very strong offense.

I think LSU can be another anomaly, especially since we're "only" 25th in total defense, which isn't a bad place to be at all. It's a step back from the elite defenses that have won titles recently, but it's still good enough if your offense lights everybody on fire and throws away the key to all the fire hydrants.

2010 Auburn had a decent defense, and an all-American lineman in Nick Fairley, and Zack Clayton was pretty good as well. And they handcuffed LSU to the tune of only ~200 yards total offense.
