re: With more of a deep passing threat, how good can our running game be?

Our 2011 offense was actually very good with the deep ball. Jefferson and especially Lee hit quite a few passes over the top for touchdowns.
Where we were lacking was in the intermediate passes. We pretty much sucked at this last year (Jefferson and Lee both). And it is these kinds of passes that opens up the rushing attack. It causes linebacker to be more aware of needing to get depth in their drops (and therefore not snuggling up into rushing lanes). It also keeps safeties deeper across the middle, where they need to either give help to cornerbacks or defense tight ends up the seam.

In the spring game Mett threw the ball slightly behind Odell to fit the hole given by the D. He literally launched himself backwards and caught the ball about a foot off the ground. Two things I took from that: Zach can make that pass and Odell is Heisman material.

I think it was more of a case that Mett didn't put in the work or show the leadership to come in a "win" the job. He wasn't going to get handed the job simply because of better skills.

our running game is going to be even better. if you load the box we can make you pay this year. That will open up all kinds of lanes for the backs and our stable will take off.
That's exactly what I'm thinking. If Mett sees 8 in the box, then he'll check to a pass. If the defense is playing back, then our stable of running backs will punish those poor bastards.
For the first time in years, I think we're going to have a better offense than defense, and that's saying something.

Pre snap reads will get us into better plays consistently based on what the defense shows. Beyond that, play action will be a much more credible threat than at any time since 2007. Lastly, and also like 2007, you can expect consistent progressions. No more tunnel vision/stare downs on our primaries. No more pass plays being screwed of the 1st read isn't available. More poise and cognitive ability fueling decisions. More using eyes and head to move safeties or force them into poor coverage situations. More stepping up in the pocket. Giving the receiver time to get open. Pushing the ball down the field. More stepping into throws. All of which makes a devastating running game even more effective.
Pretty much sums it up. I agree.

depends on if we play the good backs or Miles insists on starting Ware because he runs TOUGH.
Posted on 5/12/12 at 8:04 pm to ForeLSU
I don't think any of that mattered honestly. Barring injury, Mett was never going to see significant playing time over 2 guys that had rotated the starter role for 3 years. That's not the way Miles operates

I think it'll help tremendously. I'm not sure the stats back it up but it seemed our running game was more efficient the first part of the year.
Dont want to turn this into another JJ/JL thread but when one QB runs a lot more than the other that's just more reason to play up a little.

I AM IN COMPLETE AGREEMENT.
I watched him from the south end zone last year when we played an obviously under-classed Northwestern, but I was impressed by two things. When he has to, he can throw that ball like a rocket. One sideline pass was far and away just a quick delivery and direct hit. The other thing that he did was throw an over the top sideline deep route to an incredibly well covered Odell Beckham. At the last moment the defender recovered to break up the play, but the pass showed me he has a nice, soft touch when he needs it. If he plays like I think he is capable of playing, then I think we are going look back to last year in astonishment about how bad qb play was along with why he never played much anyway.

I think you reaching on this one. If our O can be almost as good as our D... well then sir... Could be a great year!

I don't think it's much of a reach at all. Most of the O-line returns, including TEs. We have the biggest, baddest FB in the nation in Copeland. Behind him are six running backs who can all be productive when given the chance.
We finally have a QB who, by what he's shown in limited duty, has the ability to keep defenses honest. Mett will also have Beckham, Shep and Landry to throw to, plus anyone else who wants to step up this fall.
The defense, once again, will have big questions at LB. Plenty of skill, but not a whole lot of experience.

Miles is going to run the ball 50 times a game regardless of how good the passing game is
I can't tell if this is a backhanded comment towards miles and his philosophy, but I hbe no issues whatsoever with running the ball this much. I would hope they run more if it's effective the way I think it's going to turn out with the horses on this team.

I KNOW this is a backhanded comment. But Ware is just as good as any other back on the team. Seems like these guys all have a specific role and he just so happens to be the guy to blow up the middle.
Now, I agree that he wasn't effective whatsoever towards the end of the year but if he gets back to Pre suspension shape, there's no reason for him not to be in the game.
This was also accusing Miles of playing pets like you normally do, but I know it was painfully obvious the Hilliard didn't get the touches that Ware would have In the second half of the year if it weren't for him dragging arse.

one thing for sure. M damn sure won't be recognized as a worse passing qb than J. unfortunately the same people will be calling our offensive plays, and that surely won't strike fear in any of the sec defensive coordinators

About 160yds less rushing in 7 games UO to UTk than 7 games AU to NCG.
But, about 200yds more total O in 1st 7 games, if that helps.
But.....
2 games vs rank #4 and #17 final AP in 1st 7 games.
4 games vs rank #1, #5, #19 and #1 final AP in last 7 games, and as I've posted before, 3 games vs top 5 Ds.

No.
Look back at 2005-2007 to get a true indication of a offense under Miles because we had future NFL backs along future NFL QBs on those teams.
We were a 55/45 Run/Pass offense in those seasons. We didn't start becoming one dimensional until we had a talent problem at the QB position from 2008 to 2011.

My concern is this...after a full spring, a fall practice and 4-6 months into the season Mettenberger was not recognized as being better than Jefferson and/or Lee, what makes everyone believe he is "the answer". I think it's wait and see and hope he turns out to be what's advertised.
I think you're jumping to conclusions.
No one ever said that if Mett were better than JJ an JLee, he would start over two seniors.
There's no doubt that he was.
Look at JJ and JL's stats for the last three spring games.

If La'el Collins turns out to be as good as I think he can be, him lined up at Guard next to Faulk or Hurst is going to be scary. That will be a nice boost for the running game to go along with the improved passing game

I have friend that was a wall safety last year(graduated) but told before the season start that was the far better QB talent.
