With Baseball around the corner what is the consensus on the starting lineup?

And damn I didn’t realize how many pitchers we had returning. Not just the quality depth but also the experience.

Didn’t we get a new hitting coach in the offseason?

Yes. He’s a fantastic coach

If the pitching staff stays healthy, could be a competitive team on a national level

We’ll have more guys to mis-use than we’ve had in a long time.

Yes, we did get a new hitting coach. Tulane's, I believe.

I don't remember a year in which there were so many unknowns about the lineup. At this time, Cabrera is the centerfielder. But after seeing Hampton's athleticism on the football field, I have to think he's the center fielder IF he can hit. Digiacomo is a possible outfielder, but he hasn't shown production at the plate (as of last season). Wes Toups is one of the prize recruits this year, and he is a fast outfielder who hit very well in HS. He is a future centerfielder for LSU.

Willis and Beloso could be first base and DH, but maybe CPM puts Willis in the outfield, especially if one of the freshmen catchers starts hitting.

Garza is the catcher. The other three infield positions depend on what happens at shortstop. If Hal Hughes can hit that solves a lot, but he hasn't shown a lot of signs of it. If Hal can't hit we have Zach Arnold, a freshman, who was drafted in the 34th. He is a SS who hit .406 in HS. Zach Mathis is a junior college guy who is built like Ibarra. He can hit, and he'll probably start at 3rd or 2nd. Then there is Bianco and Dugas who can be used at 2nd or stuck in the outfield just to get a bat in the lineup.

The ideal situation is that Zach Arnold can hold down SS and hit. With Mathis at 3rd, and then whoever is hitting out of Dugas and Bianco at 2nd, you have an infield that will be productive at the plate.

If Mo Hampton and Wes Toups can hit a little, combined with Cabrera, you have an outfield with the great range that we're accustomed to.

Knowing CPM, I think we'll start with Hal at short, Zach Arnold at 3rd, and Zach Mathis at 2nd. As they settle in, and reach SEC play, and assuming Hughes is hitting .200, it'll be Arnold at SS, Mathis at third, and Bianco/Dugas at second.

I am in agreement with most of your post. Really excited about the depth at catcher as well. Haven't seen Willis' arm due to his injury status last year but you have to believe he would fit nicely in RF. The only thing that I have a question about is Cade Doughty...I thought he would be figuring into the middle infield or 3rd?

Cade Doughty had his ups an downs this fall. The talent is there and once he gets enough reps and coaching at one position, he should be really good. As of now, he hasn't shown the glove for SS or 3rd. He definitely has a shot at 2nd, but there is a lot of competition there. He is too good to not play eventually.

Woodward has an eye on CPM in regards to Hughes.

If the overplaying of a .175 hitter continues, it is seen as equivalent of Miles not letting his offensive coordinator run the offense.

Based on the similar stubbornness that CPM has to Miles, this could be his last year.

I just saw in the Baseball America preview that Arnold is still injured and expected to not be ready for the start of the season. Someone else would have to confirm, but I believe it was a shoulder injury suffered early in fall practice.

Without getting too in depth I think this lineup will hit for more HR's than any LSU team since the bat change in 2011. Usually this kind of approach comes with more swings and misses but I'm confident in Eddie Smith to correct any minor issues with swings.

I've heard he was progressing but that may very well be true. I'm sure Mainieri will highlight on him this Friday.

C Garza but Milazzo can handle the position defensively for a fr
1B Beloso
2B Doughty most likely, talent there but needs to be more consistent coming out of fall, I don't put a ton of stock into fall because some players do much better once the season starts
SS Hughes for defense unless someone beats him out, Fr Arnold could not show what he could do as he missed most of fall
3B Mathis
OF will be competition but you have Cabrera, Gio, Bianco, Dugas out there competing - Dugas could also get a look at IF as well as Bianco if any of IF guys struggle
PM loves Toups
Sanford and Hampton provide depth
DH Willis and above mentioned players along with Travinski

Starters
Henry
Marceaux
Labas (coming out of fall)
Walker
Jaden Hill if healthy might push for #2 role

Bullpen
Fontenot
Usual cast of characters from last year
Two LHP's as well

D1 baseball and Baseball America had a good writeup if you want to check that out

I don’t see Cabrera playing Center. My guess is he moves to right and either Gio, Hampton or Toups are in center

Yeah, I completely forgot about him. Supposedly a stud. So much this season depends on freshmen bats coming around. I think, in spite of dominant pitching, we'll have mixed results until the last third of the season. But if some of the freshmen start hitting this team can win big.
