Winning with a QB who'd never taken a snap under center and a less than stellar defense.

LSU won a New Years Day bowl game and was leading in the second half during two of their 3 losses despite glaring inadequacies. Orgeron's staff was able to overcome much. LSU was thriving in the tough SEC despite having a QB who had never started under center and a defense who many admit was less than stellar due to key injuries. Imagine what LSU might achieve now in 2019 with Burrow very comfortable in an offense very suited to his skill level and LSU defense loaded at every position, loaded with All American talent in the secondary. The shocker would be if Alabama finally gets the crap beat out of them by LSU at their place, LSU returns a punt and two interceptions for TD's. OMG! One can start to feel the rise.

You laugh but we did have some defensive weak spots especially after chaisson went down. We didn't have the defensive line depth needed to be elite

I thought we were pretty weak on the DL and had trouble getting pressure on QBs and stopping some teams running game but to say we had a less than stellar defense is pretty absurd IMO

I think it was about the wording. Winning a New Years Six bowl is a big deal and I agree the UCF win was a good win. But, just winning any New Years Day bowl isn't the same.

Also two very questionable PI calls and a clutch FG kick @ Auburn away from 4 regular season losses.
I'm optimistic about LSU this season, but this "almost shoulda coulda woulda" talk does nothing.

Take off the shades, and you’d see that LSU’s defense was anything but stellar against the Aggies and UCF. Did not realize there were this many Stevie Wonder impersonators on the Rant.

So the defense has a few less than stellar moments in one or two games, and our defense is labeled a struggling defense. The offense sucks donkey dick all season and that's perfectly fine?
