If you'd listen to that interview, he really wasn't calling anyone out. The person in the audience asked about the discrepancy between the number of fouls and how she thought it made the game not fun to watch, to which he replied vanderbilt is good at drawing fouls at the clip in the article. He was really just answering a question and also toeing the line to not get any shite for it.

Their university foul tactics are not letting anyone in the arena without a vac card or professionally administered test within 72 hours 12 years old and up

Covid is basically a cold, at this point. Vast majority of deaths are elderly with multiple co-morbidities.

It's LONG past time to get back to complete normal. The Covid panic, which perhaps appropriate for the first month or two, is now just downright silly.

Lockdowns have now been proven to not have worked. Masks don't work. Vaccines don't prevent spread, but prevent severe outcomes. Omicron is contagious but far, far less lethal.

Let's get back to normal.

Wade has a point. With the combination of 5 personal fouls a game and the propensity for college refs to call everything a charge when the defender falls down- there's basically no incentive to actually contest shots at the rim like we do. We play defense like an NBA team and sometimes (a lot, lately) it bites us.

"The damn charge rule they've got to change. You shouldn't be able to take a charge unless you're on the ball. All this secondary defender charge stuff, they need to get rid of it. They need to get rid of it, and so, we're the only sport that rewards you for that. The secondary defender shouldn't be rewarded for that. He should have to shield or do something. He shouldn't be able to just stand there and you run him over. They need to change that, but ain't nobody listening to me so they aren't changing that anytime soon. It's just some of the rules are built for drawing fouls,

I agree with all of that, but the issue I have is

some teams are better at taking advantage of them than others."

He needs to adjust to the rules that are in place and use them to his advantage.

Walker Kessler doesn't have trouble contending shots. I think the charge rule is fine the way it is. The problem is it's rarely called properly.

LSU is fouling on 23% of their defensive possessions this season. Now, compare that to other seasons:

2021 - 20%
2020 - 19%
2019 - 22%

This season LSU is averaging 19 fouls per game.

Now, compare that to other seasons:

2021 - 17
2020 - 16
2019 - 18

Is it the most in 4 seasons? Yes. But it is not a huge deviation from past seasons. And the increase in fouls appears to be (to some degree related) to LSU's increase in defensive efficiency. This year LSU is playing the best defense they've ever played under Wade. The 2nd best year? 2019. Those also happen to be the seasons where they averaged the most fouls. Coincidence?

Perhaps they did not foul as much over the last two years because the did not actually guard anyone close enough to commit many fouls. If a slight to moderate increase in fouls is the tradeoff for a MUCH improved defense overall, I will happily take it.

On the flip side, opponents are fouling LSU on 19% of LSU's offensive possessions. Now, compare that to other seasons:

2021 - 22%
2020 - 21%
2019 - 22%

This season opponents are are averaging 16 fouls per game vs. LSU

Now, compare that to other seasons:

2021 - 18
2020 - 18
2019 - 19

Is LSU drawing the least amount of fouls in 4 years? Yes. Are they also, by far having their worst offensive season in 4 years? Yep.

So what does the data suggest? Perhaps the refs are just out to "screw" LSU...for 22 straight games...."like they always are". Or maybe LSU is fouling more because they have significantly increased their defense and getting fouled less because they don't have the offensive players this year to threaten opponents and draw fouls.

LSU's biggest issue with fouls is not so much that they are fouling too often (opponents are actually shooting the 2nd worst % in the nation from the line vs. LSU...so they aren't really taking advantage of the fouls on average). It's that LSU is not converting their own (albeit slightly less) opportunities at the line. They have their worst team FT% in the last 4 seasons.

The slight increase in fouls is a trade off for the SIGNIFICANT increase in defensive play (last two games notwithstanding). Where LSU is flawed is their offense has been so bad that they are not maximizing the benefits of the great play. That is even more pronounced at the FT line where even though they are getting to the line slightly less, they are converting a much lower % of FT's than they used to.

Bottom line:

Quit bitching about the fouls and get better on offense. Just like last the last two seasons where LSU failed to maximize their tremendous offensive play because they were horrible defensively, they are failing to maximize their great defensive play because they have been horrible offensively. Balance on both ends of the floor is the key to big time success. Learn it. Love it. Live it.

I really hate blaming coaches for blatantly fixed games.

LSU has been called for flops already this year, while our opponents conveniently haven't.

I'm not watching LSU play another game until the tournament. The SEC has made it too obvious as to what their end game is for LSU.

Remember, had UF made half their FTs, that game would have been stolen from us too.

But we can all keep denying what we are seeing game after game with LSU and the SEC.

Walker Kessler is the best center in the country. For the rest of the non-elite centers, the trade-off on contesting shots sucks.

Watch a game that Jay Bilas announces. He goes absolutely insane 2-3 times a game because the block/charge is complete and utter bullshite. It’s evolved into players basically jumping in front of an offensive player and it’s called a charge. It’s just insanity what has happened in college basketball with the refs.

LSU has 4-5 offensive fouls per game which are also considered turnovers. I don’t have the data nor do I have the desire to go back multiple seasons, but I’ve never seen a team get more charge calls against them. And before anyone says we go into the lane out of control, I dare you to watch the Arkansas game. Their 5’6 player is flopping when he’s guarding a 6’4 guy. Brandon Murray has 3 charge calls against him and fouls out.

It 100% goes hand in hand why we don’t attack the rim. When we attack the paint I feel like 50% of the time we get a charge call and other times we get hacked with no call. Acting like the refs don’t play an absolutely HUGE role in how LSU plays offense is ignorant. We have mostly FR and Soph who aren’t mature or strong minded enough yet and so they settle for tough shots because what’s the advantage of going to the rim?
