He's been a volunteer (unpaid) coach for his entire stay at LSU.
I had no idea this was the case. Does LSU baseball really not have the budget to give this guy $35k a year?

Has nothing to do with that...volunteer assistant is something the NCAA invented.

So for LSU that's Mainieri, Alan Dunn and Andy Cannizaro.

Good.
LSU deserves better than someone who can't get the UNO job after being at LSU for 8 years...

Two years experience with the school he got hired by right? So when debating the merits of two guys with no head coaching experience, and about the same playing experience, it isn't preposterous to assume that Dean's experience with UNO had something to do with it. I would take an internal hire, who is used to the personnel, the facilities, and fundraising matters, over an external hire any day, assuming all else is equal.

Then why doesn't Lamar do the same?

Update: Decision made. Davis will be an assistant at Lamar this season. He won't be with LSU.

I'm not sure of the inner workings of Lamar Baseball unforunately. I don't know if they had an internal candidate.

I plan on going to the Lamar game on Feb 22.
Has anyone attended a game there?

Congrats to Will. Great guy and a hard worker. Happy to see him move up in the ranks. Even when he was a player he always had the mindset of a coach.

Because he was always on the bench?

Sucks for the guy's job he took.

You mean the coach that is retiring after 38 years? Im almost certain that isn't "taking" someone's job.
Posted on 1/22/16 at 8:25 am to SaturdayTraditions
No. College baseball is only allowed two paid assistants. If he's starting this year, one of those assistants had to leave.
