I don't understand what advantages it has over a regular handoff. The running back has to first focus on the ball to catch it THEN read the holes.
On a regular handoff, the RB has his eyes upfield the entire time.
This.
Plus, as I said before, the defense does not have to honor the chance of the qb keeping the ball at all.

That removes all chance of there being a play action pass off of it.
well that just isn't true. Just because LSU hasn't taken advantage of it, a QB could freeze a defense and linebackers with a toss fake

and his motion is dictated by the hand off along with a slower speed when hitting the hole. It is an outstanding short yardage play, because the runner can hit the whole with larger force

LSU, in particular Jeremy Hill, was most successful out of the single back formation.

1 out of about 15 times we get more than 3 yards.

The reason the Toss Dive gets so much hate is it's a very notable and unique play in the Les Miles offense, thus it serves as the focal point for hating on whatever pathetic system we've been running for the past few years. The actual merits of the play are immaterial.
So it's the new short side option or slip screen for the current rantards? Gotcha

When did the toss dive overtake the short side option to become the de facto offensive play to hate?

Not the way we've been running it no but you could very easily fake that toss for a play action. We just haven't exploited that feature yet. These are the things I want Cam to implement

against one of the top defenses we played too

Catching the quick toss deeper in the backfield allows the back to have more time focused on reading the defense and his blocks. On a handoff, although his eyes should be looking downfield, he also has that split second where his focus goes to securing the handoff and finding that mesh point with the QB. The quicker the back can get his entire focus on finding the hole the better. At least that is the thought process behind the toss dive.

it also offers some protection from a defender coming off the edge

he's been pretty balanced his entire career. Went away from the run this year. I would imagine the playbook to be pretty similar. He likes power formations outside of this 1 season (it could have been he never had receivers in Baltimore until recently)

yep. Also, one of LSU's best plays under Miles was set up because of this play.

We also have a senior qb. I don't think it would be wise to completely change the play book with just a few months for mett to learn it.
We'll see some tweaks for sure but not many major changes

I hear we are switching to the wishbone to get more carries for the backs.

It also gives the back more time to read his blocks and see his cut backs due to the zone blocking scheme
This is fricking dumb. Just run inside zone.
The back is at the same depth, and now instead of just taking the hand off, he actually has to look to catch the toss. As opposed to taking his steps and seeing the play developing the entire time while the QB is responsible for the mesh.
