Talked with josh this afternoon. He is a good friend of mine and I didn't want to start this thread but I knew just a little after noon. He is going to be evaluated and make a decision on if he'll play again. Josh got the raw end of the deal when he went out against Florida. He missed a few tests while dealing with his concussion after effects that the professors didn't allow him to make up and he eventually had to drop the classes. This put him at part time and not eligible to play by NCAA rules. He was not reinstated in time to play most of the season. This is an all around really great guy. He doesn't have a negative bone in his body and literally would do anything for anybody. I can assure you his decision will be we'll thought out and will involve his family heavily.

surprised the university allowed that to happen with his classes.. an eerily similar situation MANY years ago.. is what muddied the water between St. Aug and LSU...

Some professors have a hard-on for screwing over athletes due to a perceived entitlement for all SA.

Ace looks like we are both right. RB,QB,LB more at risk. But OL suffered most frequent number of hits to head even though their scores was lower at 29
amazing what google search can tell you with just a click of the mouse.

To get a better idea of how these factors contribute to concussions, the researchers combined the data on head acceleration and impact location to come up with a measure called HITsp, which they believe is a good indicator of concussions. On average, the running backs had the highest HITsp scores, at 36.1. Quarterbacks fell just behind, at 34.5, and linebackers followed closely with scores of 32.6. The data showed that offensive and defensive linemen had the lowest scores, at roughly 29. But that was not necessarily good news, as they also suffered the most frequent hits to the head.

Certainly this puts these position groups in the greatest risk of actually suffering that first concussion.

Which is why it is problematic once a lineman shows a propensity for concussions.

Something else we didn't discuss - because of the nature of the positions, linemen typically have more robust protective gear, including helmets and face masks, and they are, typically, very large men - however, they are engaged in 50 to 70 battles per game with similarly large men, which largely negates these advantages.

What happens in space, with RBs, QBs, LBs (and I'd be surprised if Safeties didn't come right behind LBs) is that the head is a weapon and a target, and many of these collisions take place at a higher speed, thus imparting more kinetic energy than is normally experienced by the down linemen. But, the linemen are getting hit in the hard far more often, as you suggest.

I sure hope that's not the best we can do to replace williford. Vadal was pretty rusty last year, and I remember him having an absolutely atrocious game or two.

This is dumb. Outside of the bowl game he was one of our better OL while being a TRUE FRESHMAN

When I played D-end I used my helmet as a tool. If you snap off the line and pop the O-Lineman right in the face mask it's going to startle him and throm him on his heels. It will usually make them close there eyes as well. I would use that state of vulnerability to my advantage to get passed the line and get in the backfield. Many people think that it is strange for lineman to get concussions, but the truth is they get them all the time. They will play through it most of the time. Which is not good.

Josh is from my hometown. He's good friends with the son of a lady that works for my Dad. Had the chance to meet him one time at a Troy game on a recruiting visit he was taking. Great guy. Wish him all the best.

This is true, unfortunately... When a kid sustains a serious concussion and can't spend extended amounts of time in lighted rooms, give the guy a break... Give him an " I "at the end of the semester and let him come back next semester and complete the course... Don't punish him academically for it... Stupid.

frick that UF DL who hit him with the cheapshot.

Agreed. Seems like JW had gotten banged up during another play and left the game for a few plays and came back in and then that happened. Instead of the new rule regarding hitting players above the shoulders the officials should really be trying to protect players that are totally out of a play and get blindsided for someone's enjoyment of laying a guy out. The same thing easily could have happened to Murray (concussion) in the SECCG when he got blindsided by a Bama player and without a penalty called. Those hits shouldn't be allowed in college football.

...Josh needs to hang it up ... become student team intern or something .. not worth risking virtually certain long term brain damage at this point .. he passed that big ol' red line on this ... unfortunate , but true ... good luck Josh ...

I don't deny that there are some LSU profs who have it in for athletes, but there are procedures in place to protect students who are ill or injured. I am hard pressed to think that there are professors who would not cut any student slack if they were injured or sick.

Was it Wiliford or Blackwell that was puking in the field a few years ago? I remember the broadcast was keyed in on him, and cut to commercial right as he was hurling.

Anyway, they said it was a stomach big, or maybe he was hit in the stomach (I wish I remembered the details better).

Looking back, I wonder if it was really a head injury.

ETA: did a search and was Blackwell in 2009 LINK

First, wish big Josh a full, speedy recovery.

Seemed to recall Blackwell attributed it to jitters.

Hate to see kids' lives affected by injuries like this. They all work so hard to make their way through collegiate sports and incidents like this are just bad for everyone.

I hope he recovers and takes care of himself going forward.
