Why Pull Etling For a Freshman QB

Upfront Disclaimer: I am an Alabama fan....with great respect for LSU's program and tradition. I am not here to troll nor stir the pot, but simply with an honest question:
Why did LSU pull your starting QB at the end of the game? I realize you were down 14 points, with just a few minutes left. And it's not like Etling was lighting it up or highly accurate. But you're still in it at that point. It's a long shot certainly, and not easily done, but connect on a big play or two, score a quick touchdown (like the long run up the middle), and you at least have a shot to come back and tie the game. By putting in a FRESHMAN QB in a situation where Bama's D and everyone in the stadium knew you had to pass, it felt like LSU was giving up and conceding the game in those final few minutes.
Is that how LSU fans saw it? Was anyone on LSU's side baffled by that move from the coaches? Or was there a belief that the freshman gave you a better shot at a comeback than the starter did?
Interested in thoughts from the LSU nation. In the meantime, a tip of the hat, all respect to your team, and I'll even give you a GEAUX TIGERS....now that last Saturday is behind us!

So that he would have been in the game. For next year he can think about how to make it happen against a good defense. Probably nothing more than that.

In order to hit some of the wide open receivers LSU had running all over the field.

Who says he got pulled? Looked more like Coach O was giving the understudy a little taste of the action.
Just not sure why you would try to read too much into the move.

Etling has reached his ceiling. Brennan has the potential to be more electric if given the chance

To deflect the fans calling in this week and asking why he didn't play.

So, Coach O was conceding this game and looking to next year?

The game was mostly out of reach once he went in.
Etling missed too many throws.
Get Brennan experience in Bryant Denny.
Maybe he pulls something off.
I didn't really get all the "now you go to Brennan?" outrage.
Going forward I honestly think Brennan gives us the better chance to make plays. He's a far superior passer. The supporting cast is good enough by itself to go 3-0 so why not get him the experience and benefit of bowl practice/game before going into next year as a starter on the road against a likely top 5-10 Miami?

So was that move a QB change going forward? With the soft schedule remaining, will Brennan be the new starter?

No, but he will probably see more PT.

Thanks for the replies. I was surprised at the move, but it sounds like LSU fans were fine with it.
I'm out. Won't lurk around your boards. Good luck on the rest of the season.
Oh....and please beat the heck out of TN!

Question: Were you born in Alabama or are you a traitor?
Posted on 11/6/17 at 11:54 am to BamainTigerLand
Not saying he would have connected on any or all, but Myles has the arm strength to deliver the passes that Etling badly underthrew.

Born and raised in Alabama. Good friends in Louisiana. Love the culture and the food. Have been and always be crimson and white, though.

but connect on a big play or two
This is what Etling couldn't do. Canada gave him several opportunities at this and Etling, shockingly ( ), came up short (pun). Brennan gave us a better chance at making these big plays. Problem is our OL was gassed by that point.

You might have answered your own question.

development would be the main reason. However, it's not going to happen. Very few,if any, coaches will risk losing 3 games to develop a qb. Every single game matters. Matters for bowl game, matters for recruiting, legacy, etc.

Wow. He wasn't a typical gump. I doubt he was really an Alabama fan.
In any case, had he heard CEO's explanation, he would have heard the reasoning that DE missed too many assignments. Contrary to his belief. The game was really out of hand. LSU wasn't going to make up 14 points against that bama defense. We just didn't have a qb to get that done. If we are going to lose, I'd rather lose giving the future qb snaps than the guy who is about to graduate.
