Why is Jay Johnson a candidate?

Year1: 49 wins (CWS runner-up)
Year2: 38 wins (NCAA regional)
Year3: 34 wins (didn’t make tourney)
Year4: 32 wins (didn’t make tourney)
Year5: Covid
Year6: This year: back to CWS
First 4 years at Zona were a clear downward trajectory, which is very concerning for me. I’d prefer to see a coach’s 1st/2nd year be the worst and getting gradually better from there forward. Great coaches typically improve after their first year, not the pattern here with Johnson at Arizona.
IMO we have better options than Johnson. I’ll be a tad disappointed if he is the hire.
And that’s not even getting into the West-coast-lifer discussion. (Born in Cali, has always coached out West).

My concern would be him being a west coast guy.
Andy Lopez was a phenomenal coach. Didn’t do much at Florida but won a CWS at Pepperdine and then Arizona.

I think the only reason his name is coming up is because they are in Omaha right now. Same thing with O'Conner other than his ties to PM.

I think his inconsistency at Arizona is certainly cause for concern, but he's made it to Omaha twice in 6 years, which is pretty impressive I guess. Also, it should be noted that Arizona is not some trash program, they have great facilities and won a national title in 2012 before Jay was on campus.
He has done well at multiple stops though, his players love him, he can recruit his arse off, and I like the style of ball his teams play with.

How many times will you post this

It’s Jay Johnson. He has made it to the CWS 2/5 full seasons. You can go look at the two bad years and you’ll see they were restocking the program which had become relying on juco transfers. It was essentially laid bare. It took two full cycles to restock.
You’re ridiculous if you don’t want Jay Johnson. He is young, knows how to recruit and his players enjoy him. His teams all particularly hit well.

Thanks. I thought I had read this post somewhere before.

He is officially available to interview for the position at around 4:30pm CST prior to flying back to Arizona.

I just do not want Johnson. I can’t think of any examples of good/great coaches declining their first 4 seasons on a major job
If you have some examples to the contrary, please point them out, I just can’t think of any

I look forward to your melt. The only candidate thrown out there that’s worth a hard no was Bianco.

Seems to me he is one of the best talent evaluators, recruiters and developers in the country if you look at his career resume dating back to his Kris Bryant days at USD.

I won’t melt, just definitely think we have better options than Johnson.
You have been saying for days that it’s gonna be Johnson. You have connections/sources or is that just your prediction?
I’ll get on board with any hire in relatively short order whether I like the hire or not.

How is it a decline if he’s in the CWS this year
Posted on 6/21/21 at 2:24 pm to JPLSU1981
I know 1 CWS in 20 years wasn’t great but damn yall have some weird standards When Johnson has been twice in 5 seasons
Posted on 6/21/21 at 2:26 pm to Lester Earl
Straight up insanity. I think some people are going to have a hard time realizing LSU Baseball isn’t the end all be all for some coaches on the backend of their careers.
