Why do we put random guys in the 4 hole?

I'm not even trying to get into the logic of who all is in the lineup. But why when we plug someone in the lineup that apparently isn't good enough to be in there regularly do we go hey you're batting cleanup? I can't even start to comprehend that

Well while I get the matchup against this pitcher with left handed batters it hasn't worked well for us this year. Also the main point is if this was what you wanted to go to why is it that drost or Sanford seem to be out of the lineup or in the 3 or 4 hole? I guess I would be less confused if you had the same dudes and Sanford and Safford were batting 6 and 8

The truth is that there’s not anyone in the lineup good enough to hit in the 3 or 4 hole. But somebody has to by default.
