Why did we immediately go to 3 wide sets with Etling? Did Cam Take Over?

Reminded me of the Jimbo Fisher offenses of 2003-2006. Remember when Bowe, Davis, and Doucet were almost always on the field at the same time?
I saw that a lot the other night and it happened right away. Also, Etling was in the shotgun more.
The field opened up, we passed to the TE immediately, RBs on wheel routes, and we passed over the middle.
I saw things in a couple of quarters that I haven't seen in 2 years years. Why?
It was as though Cameron knew what Etling could do and was just waiting for a chance to run a different kind of offense than what we normally run. Is this why Miles was mad? Is this Cam trying to answer the criticism?
Was this Cam taking the reigns away from Miles in the 2nd quarter? Did Miles take them back in the 2nd half? Did we something of a coaching mutiny take place on Saturday night that hasn't been reported?

Don't forget roll-out passes/bootlegs, 0 for Harris in 5 quarters- then 3-4 for Etling.

Etling's first play had a FB and a TE if I remember correctly.
I formation play action, down the left sideline to jeter. Followed by 5 yard run by Williams, then check down pass to Williams for a first down.
Harris never got to his second set of downs on a drive so he had less plays the whole first quarter than Etling had his first drive. So naturally it seems like Etling had more calls, but Harris had some 3 wide opportunities in his 6 plays I believe

Agreed. It makes you wonder if BH has trouble grasping the offense.

Yes and at halftime Les said, " That's enough let's run the clock out and attempt some low percentage passes".

I would give calculus equations to a senior in HS and algebra to an 8th Grader?

BH went out with 3 WR a bunch of times but failed to produce

If you noticed that Etling first reads were to the tight ends not immediately to the outside.

U have never seen a TE come in motion and run a three combo route like the one for the TD. I wish we see more motion before plays bc it gives the qb a way better idea of what the defense is playing.

The full game is on youtube, go to the 1st quarter 10 minute mark where brandon harris comes out the spread with 3 wrs and overthrows a wide open guy on 3rd and 2

quote:Not saying this is why Miles seemed mad, but I think this might be your answer. Cam saw something in Etling that made him trust him more.

Then again, they may have simplified the offense so much for Brandon that they both created the conditions where he couldn't succeed (vicious circle type thing) and without handcuffs on the plays/packages Cam just played with his bright shiny new toy. We have seen such things before, so there's a history there.
And then handcuffs came back on after half by the way. So there's your second answer, in my mind anyway.
Also by the way, if both are true that means LSU's base offense is 3 WR with a much different set of route trees.

Correct. He had 2-3 plays with 3 wideouts but could not convert. When you go 3 and out on your only 2 possessions its kind of hard to get too deep in the playbook.

because they were doubling up on the WRs

Because Danny can pass & Harris can't!

No they weren't. They were playing safeties high man for most of the game. It is why a lot of the combo routes worked. LBs getting caught up in the wash.

quote:good point, something we "on the Rant" keep forgetting: pre-snap reads to shorten the time ball is held. Where are both BH and DE on this. I haven't really noticed; I just assume BH isn't doing it right or more likely assume he can't make adjustments accordingly (due to handcuffs).

Look, I'm not saying we never go 3 wide, but we are in a 2 WR set A LOT. Even in obvious passing downs. And, we wonder why Harris can't find anyone open.
I am shocked at how often we are in 2 WR sets in this offense.
