To be fair, a lot of major schools passed on Marshall Faulk because of size. That's why he went to San Diego State. They were one of the few schools that offered him as a rb vs defense. Held him back from being recruited even in h.s. for the Catholic League schools.

I remember the recruiting fight for Shawn Jackson who ultimately went to FSU. Bowden ultimately got him after having dinner with him at the Westin in NO. Also at that dinner was Deion Sanders and Burt Reynolds (from a friend who was Concierge there - still swears it to this day)

I sat behind him on a recruiting visit for the Houston game where we had the 21 point 4th quarter comeback. There were several other Catholic players including Travis Minor also there. He was very thin, but had an incredible football mind. Whenever either team would come to the line, he knew what play was going to be run and knew what the defense was doing too.

I’ve heard many times he was anti LSU and this wasn’t true at all. He was a lifelong Bama fan and LSU wasn’t offering unless something fell through with the QB’s we had coming.

He was never going to LSU.

John Mackovic did a good job recruiting him and Texas is a good school.

Catholic did not steer guys to LSU in the mid 90’s.

Simple as that.

Yeah like how TF did Bowden and FSU come to BR and take not one but TWO Catholic running backs (yes I know Dunn was the QB senior year) that decade and Minor was the Gatorade National Player of the Year IN OUR BACKYARD?

Really speaks to FSU's national reputation at the time and how down LSU was as a program in terms of recruiting relevance in the 1990s.

Admittedly haven’t read the entire thread, but the story back then was Texas was going hard after Greg Brown and offered Applewhite to help get Brown. Greg Brown was a good player for them, but his kid was a top 10 basketball recruit a few years ago and signed with Texas.

Everyone wanted him as a DB a nola guy on staff got him to SD - when he ran the ball he had 11 people chasing him.

He actually developed into a very good quarterback at the University of Texas. He was by far better than Chris Simms-in fact, Texas opponents were quoted as saying Major Applewhite would check off a lot faster at the line than Chris Sims. But Chris Simms Sr was good friends with Mack Brown, and Major really got screwed. Texas was a much better team when Major started.

He grew up an Alabama fan I believe.

As someone who knows the family personally, this is such bullshite and I notice it's the excuse that gets spread around here a lot when a Louisiana kid doesn't go to LSU (even if they don't go to Bama either)
uh it has been documented before he most certainly was named after the bama back and he grew up a bama fan. He said it in an interview.
