re: Why did Bill Arnsparger leave so quickly?

Arnsparger couldn’t stand daddy Dale. LSU actually tried to keep Arnsparger by offering him to be AD and Head coach, his question in the meeting was does that mean I can fire Dale Brown? lol. When he was being interviewed for the LSU job he was known as one of if not the best DC in the NFL. At that time, Colleges couldn’t come close to paying coaches what NFL guys were getting. When told by LSU that there was no way to match NFL offers, Arnsparger said that’s OK, I’ll come for free. He had is NFL retirement already. They settled on a salary of 87k. My have times changed.

If I remember right, Arnsparger took the AD job at Fla..
Yeah and when he left LSU he talked the LSU powers into hiring Mike Archer...Arnsparger laughed all the way to Florida and hired Spurrier!

He said he was retiring and then a week later he went to Florida.

Broadhead got paranoid about everything. Crazy thing is that he was ahead of his time with running an athletic department. Wanted to use sponsorships, suites, stopped using the good ole boy network for concessions. He pissed a lot of the locals off and they came after him.

When Broadhead went to the BOS meeting to ask them to allow him to fire Stovall, John McKeithen filibustered for 48 minutes to try and save Stovall.

Arnspager left to be AD at UF, recommended that we hire Archer, then hired Spurrier, who was interested in the LSU job.
Saban left for a $3+ million dollar a year raise and his dream shot at an NFL job. He was a DC under Belichick at Cleveland before Michigan State.
Can’t blame either really.

This thread just reinforces my belief that TD posters are incapable of spelling people's names correctly. Even ones they respect and appreciate.

Bill actually interviewed for the Florida job during the 86 season. I was in the locker room after the Tulane game when he announced to the team he was leaving. Players were shocked. He didn’t hire Spurrier until the 1990 season. Spurrier was at Duke from 87-89. Every LSU fan gets this wrong that Bill hired him away from LSU.

Bill was the best football mind we had as a head coach not named Saban. I’d argue he was probably a better pure football mind than Saban, but he got sick of the bullshite surrounding running a college program much quicker and lacked Nick’s commitment to pull that off in full.
And yeah, he absolutely gave zero fricks about meaningless bowl games.

Arnsparger actually knew that LSU had the whole team coming back the year he was leaving. He told the higher ups, if you don’t change anything they can win the national championship next year. Archers first year 10-1-1 with loss to Bama and tied OSU. LSU was better than Bama that year, think Hodson was hurt.

That team Archer had his first year was freaking STACKED!

and Spurrier was reportedly coming to LSU as his replacement. He bolted for AD position and hired Spurrier at Florida.
That is why he is not highly regarded at LSU by those around back then.
BTW, Mike Archer an assistant coach was hired primarily because the players liked him. That is not a reason to hire a coach, and it was proved such.

quote:And Dumb arse Joe Dean promoted DC Mike Archer to HC. Spurrier wanted the LSU job and Dean just blew him off in favor of Archer because the team wanted him to be the HC.
Because he wanted to be AD and Head coach… Left for Florida and hired Steve Spurrier from Duke.

Guidry started and Tommy came in during 4th qtr to try a comeback. Lost 22-10 I think. Should’ve won the Ohio State game.

Spurrier didn’t get hired by Florida until 1990.

I guess he could see a chop block coming. Side stepped.

Bill Arnsparger became the AD at UF in December of 1986.
Arnsparger hired Spurrier to coach UF football in December of 1989.
The Rant narrative of Arnsparger doubly screwing LSU by recommending Archer and hiring Spurrier at UF has a 3 year offset to the timeline and is pure Rant crapola.
While Spurrier was interested in the LSU job when Arnsparger left, he was ultimately hired by Duke in early 1987 to be their HC, coincidentally the same year as Archer became the LSU HC. Only after three years of success at Duke was Spurrier hired as HC at UF.

and hired Spurrier who was reportedly in final negotiations with LSU. Arnsbarger turned out to be a turn coat and screwed LSU.
Can you imagine what LSU would have been with Spurrier. ?

The Spurrier myths with LSU fans will live forever. He was OC at duke and then went to USFL as a head coach. Interviewed for LSU job and when asked if he would leave if UF job came open he honestly answered that his dream was to go back to UF and coach. LSU cancelled the second interview and Spurrier played it up in the media for years that LSU didn’t want him. He was a great coach but certainly couldn’t be considered a sure thing in 1986.

Hodson’s knee was blown out previous game. He came in that game towards the end with this brace on his leg. He struggled to do a simple 3step drop back while The likes of Cornelius Bennet was coming at him.
