the big question is if you can get a coach making a couple million to leave a spot where he is comfortable to come to LSU.

No, you can't.

I agree it’s a risk coming to LSU or any big name school for that matter for a well paid coach who is comfortable.

Agreed. I just don't think Vandy is LSU. But I am a homer so there is that. South Carolina was the darling of college baseball. What happened to them?

Their coach took a promotion. Great proof how important the coach is.

When Augie Garrido retired, Texas tried mightily to find his replacement.

This was what was "reported " online after Garrido's announcement:

quote:

The good news for the Longhorns is, similar to the football program and perhaps more so, the combination of prestige, facilities and resources makes the Texas job one of -- if not the most --truly coveted gigs in college baseball. The Longhorns should have their pick of the nation’s elite, and there’s already some talk among the national media that the next Texas head coach will be a home run hire.

Sound familiar?

The Austin newspaper listed the top candidates for the job:

Kevin O'Sullivan (Florida), Jim Schlossnagle (TCU), Dan McDonnell (Louisville) and Dan Heefner (Dallas Baptist). All turned down the job, eventually given to David Pierce, who had just gone to Tulane.

Five years later would any of those guys be interested in the LSU job? If not, who's our David Pierce? That's what we would be settling for. (Pierce's record in the Big 12, by the way, is a combined 41-37).

(Personally, I think Schlossnagle would jump at the chance to take the LSU job. And maybe McDonnell.)

Why settle for Vitello?
He was an assistant coach at TCU for Jim Schlossnagle, who's won 664 more games and been to five more College World Series than Vitello.
Why not try to hire the well-credentialed mentor who's respected throughout college baseball?

I mean why not? It just makes sense to make the move.

Maybe he likes working at Vandy and living in Nashville.

Wrong. Totally wrong.

Vitello was an assistant at TCU in 2011-13. Then he left.

Schlossnagle and TCU went to the next FOUR College World Series. Four, including 2015 when his team whipped LSU's arse two games. (all without Vitello)

You realize Vitello was the one who recruited the teams 2014-2017 and since he’s been gone TCU has been in a downward spiral so to say.

At the same time Vitello has taken a terrible Tennessee program and improved them each year.

Yea the two are dependent of each other.

this...and after 2017 TCU fell off a little
2018 they didn't make regionals and were 33-23
2019 they went 34-28 and lost in regionals

Unlimited scholarships at Vandy are hard to leave.

Not to mention LSU Athletics is a clown show.
