So have a football and basketball team that would lose to Slippery Rock?

If we ditch a different men's sport or add an extra women's sport, we could give out more baseball schollies and still comply with Title IX. Stupid that the NCAA doesn't allow it.

If we removed Title 9 from the equation baseball is still a sport that loses money at 99% plus of schools in the country. Does baseball merit getting more scholarships than say women's tennis...I'd say yes. But in the end you'd still essentially be supplementing a sport with full scholarships that doesn't pay it's own freight.

College baseball is huge here but it isn't most everywhere else.

They should count the scholarships that the athletic department gives to female cheerleaders toward the total. It would help balance the numbers and the scholarships are already provided by the athletic department.

Blame women’s sports if you want. Title ix is complete crap. But college baseball doesn’t really “deserve” money any more than women’s sports at most schools.

Ok, but you are still dictating how schools spend their scholarships. I don't care if other schools like baseball or hate baseball or whatever. LSU likes baseball, we should spend our scholarships like we want to.

Tony you're right. It's totally a setup for inequality and a competitive disadvantage for your school. It'd be like having the sec office and officials all based out of Baton Rouge or something! I mean come on! How fair would that be??

Because women are equal in everything. Except sports where they need their own divisions and 1 scholarship for every male scholarship.

I'm for that, but there is no place in all of American sports where it works this way.

Until we started winning no one gave a crap about baseball. If we start losing it will be the same.

Agree. But if we want to have 25 baseball schollies and no lacrosse we should be allowed to do it.

Individual sport limits make sense for football and MBB but there's no reason for the NCAA to put limits on other sports.

TOPS has to be earned. It cannot be just given to LSU Baseball players from Louisiana. It is an academic scholarship that must be earned and maintained academically. If Alabama thought higher ed was important, AL would come up with a similar plan to what GA and LA have.

You are wrong on the last part. Alabama’s automatic merit scholarships based on test scores and requisite GPA are among the most generous. Their mission is to attract upper tier students from around the country. 57% of the student body is from out of state.

From their website: More than 40 percent of UA’s 7,407-member freshman class scored 30 or higher on the ACT, and 38 percent were in the top 10 percent of their high school graduating class. The entering class in 2017 carries an average high school grade-point average of 3.72, with 34 percent having a high school GPA of 4.0 or higher.

Baseball has become a forgotten sport at Alabama. We all remember the success they had in the 90s under Wells. They could get there again, but football is top priority. Football revenue is a major funding source for the merit scholarships.

Anyway, I’d love to see LSU embark on a similar mission, but we’re fighting just to save TOPS.

Skip was guest speaker to my Sports Law class at LSU in 1997. He explained that baseball and all men’s sports have to balance against the women’s sports. Since 85 football scholarships are given out, they decided to limit men’s scholarships in other sports. He didn’t like it. It also limited the coaches. He told us that his baseball team has 35 players, 3 coaches and a GA. He asked a golf team member in our class how many ladies were on her team. She told him 7. He asked how many coaches they had. She said 3 coaches and a GA. Skip said, “That’s just not right!” She was pretty ticked.

It just sucks that baseball is the only sport that has to fight the draft and you can't even offer a full ride to an entire team.

Thats an LSU decision. Nothing to do with scholarships.

There is not an NCAA limit on number of coaches in baseball? There is in football. That’s why we now call the extra guys (fb assistant coaches) “analysts”.

It's designed to help northern teams, particularly Big 10 Teams.

Same reason the season start dates were pushed back.

If the sports scholarships are full offer the smart players full-ride academic scholarships like DIII schools do.

That's the reason in a nutshell. Big Ten commissioner, Jim Delany, pushed for a number of restrictions that, in essence, forced kids who might have wanted to play in the SEC or Pac-12 to stay in Indiana and Minnesota.

And you're right about the start date being pushed back to help the climate-challenged schools. Another Delany initiative.
