i guess you have to define what is meant by "LSU's Joe Paterno"...
1. if you mean the patriarch of the football program: Charlie Mac. Just oozed class for decades both on and off the field.
2. if you mean a guy who built a program from the ground up and heavily influenced the entire athletic program over decades: Skip Bertman.
3. if you mean a guy who stayed too long and had a hand in embarrassing the University on occasion: Joe Dean.

Skip bertman when it happens, as far as a coach who did the most for the university.

closest thing to that you will ever see in Louisiana is Eddie Robinson...

Paterno wasn't just a great coach, he was Penn State's identity. As great and loved as Skip Bertman, Charles McClendon, Dale Brown and Les Miles one day are, I don't think the whole of the LSU community wraps up their identity in them. When we think LSU, we don't think one of those people as our singular identity.
With Eddie Robinson and the Grambling community, I suspect that dynamic is in place. And a lot of it has to do with these little towns being isolated. Happy Valley and Grambling are not dissimilar in that regard.

Not even close to a coach or anything to Jo pas level but what about Sam Nadar ? He's been around

No he wasn't or those little boys would not have suffered....Where is the support for those little boys.......?

LSU doesn't have a Joe Paterno in its past or its present and I hope we never do. No one man should ever transcend the university.

Les Miles will be our Joe Paterno... Although most people will currently disagree.
This.
Except for the fact that if Coach Miles only won 2 titles in 40 years rantards would discredit everything else he accomplished and call him a failure.

Hopefully we havent ever had a coach that was ok with kids being raped.

I don't think LSU had/has/ever will have a coach with the power and loved to the Joe Pa level.
When your AD and president ask you to give it up, you say no, and you remain...I think that says all that's needed bout Joe P and Penn St.
Best we can offer at this time would be Skip and Les.

Gary Crowton?
I understand what the OP is asking so I'm not bashing the question...but comparing anyone in LSU's history to Joe Paterno is impossible. In this day of firing coaches for mediocrity, no one will ever come close to accomplishing what he did for Penn State.

no one. you go 13 and 1, blowout one of the toughest schedules in history, split in 2 games with the nc, and half of you want the coach gone.
it's a wonder les didnt jump to the nfl with all this stupid shitt in some of you "fans".

A salesman who has few peers....I miss this guy and the energy & enthusiasm he brought to Tiger Town. Things haven't been the same since he's been gone- even in the "good" years....

Our Joe Pa was Charlie Mac. He was that "Dean of Coaches" type of coach. He was from the same era and same mentality as Joe Pa.
We fired him for almost a decade of mediocrity. Coaches today wouldn't get as many chances as Charlie Mac, and in fact, no LSU coach has.
