It's shocking that people actually believe that a players performance on the field is tied in any way, shape or form to the number on their jersey.

And It’s just barely a tradition!
It has become a tradition, but the "lore" surrounding its importance in the history of LSU sports is largely a figment of marketing. Jacob Hester has told the story of how it started. In short, Hester was randomly assigned the number by the LSU equipment manager after Mauck left. Obviously Mauk and Hester had significant LSU careers wearing the number, but when Hester's career was over he jokingly said the number should be assigned to another "unathletic white guy"...his good friend, Richard Dickson.
It was only after that LSU decided to assign some BS significance to the number by saying something along the lines of "It’s worn by a player who represents the traits and spirit associated with LSU football". A few years later the defensive players decided to start their own "tradition" with No. 7. None of it arose from any unique story/event like many traditions arise from.
That said, if it has significant meaning to the program/players, then keep it going.

Highsmith assigned it.
Peterson assigned it.
Tyrann wore because of PP7
Fournette wore for 7th ward
DJ Chark switched to it.
Ponamsky decided to make it a thing.
Giles failed
Put it back in rotation and an athlete will wear.

If it means something in the locker room go for it. As long as recruits are wearing 7 when they show up on trips it will mean something.
I don’t see why people get so into it or against it.

This.
I think where the criticism comes in is because it has been built up to mean it should translate to great results on the field (at least form the fans' perspective). i.e. only the best players should wear those numbers. As we've seen, that often hasn't been the case.

When people say something is cursed, they don't literally believe that. They just notice the results.
Correlation doesn't imply causation.

I fully believe that there are posters on this site who feel the numbers are cursed.
