the DC was Mike Archer

Surprised no one has mentioned Archer. He was DC and worked closely with the DB's...terrible HC but the guy could really coach up a defense while he was here.

Most all modern offenses are light years ahead of even the top offenses prior to 2000 or so.

That being said, even in the modern area, LSU has had quality defensive coordinators more often than not:

2000 Phil Elmassian (mediocre)
2001 Gary Gibbs (mediocre)
2002- 2004 Muschamp (elite)
2005-2007 Pelini I (elite)
2008 Mallory/Peveto (horrible)
2009-2014 Chavis (elite)
2015 Kevin Steele (good)
2016-2019 Aranda (elite)
2020 Pelini II (horrible)
2021 Deronte Jones (good)
2022-2023 House (horrible)
2024 Baker (good)

Charlie McClendon was as good as any.

All those Dietzel fans surrounding 1958 (and that was an outstanding football team in every way) skip over the part where Mac just smothered the competition and made irrelevant the offensive tomfoolery.

Eleven football games in 1958 and Mac's defense gave up:

6, 3, 6, 0, 7, 7, 0, 18* (We did score 50 in this game), 6, 0 and 0 points.

If that isn't the greatest defensive performance in LSU history, then we can look to 1969 when Mac was the head coach (and also responsible for the defense) - this was a more modern time with much more offense being generated in the league and around CFB.

6, 0, 8, 0, 10, 20, 26* (this was the loss - by 3 points), 15, 6, 0

Mac was a better DC asleep that most are fully awake.

They got torched by mediocre offenses. Inconsistent defense. See Auburn and Georgia games in 2005. 2006 was their best defense by far, then they were inconsistent again in 2007.

Understand that Pete Jenkins had the title of DC but Buddy Nix called the game...

Low iq posters like The pirate king couldn’t stand Aranda because people with brains knew he was tStraw stirring the drink and they couldn’t stand him getting any of O’s credit. Sure got awful quiet the following year.

That’s about 56-4 on per game average.
Guess Army was unnatural.

No. Great defenses shut down offenses back then. But college football then, as it still is now, was full of mismatches.

It was certainly a different era, but the ‘69 & ‘70 defenses had some ridiculous stats, especially against the run.
Ole Cholly Mac knew defense, in large part because he put his best athletes on defense.

Yeah those two defenses of Lsu and Bama had a huge number from the defenses that went to the NFL. I think like out of the 22 starters on defense all of them were drafted.

Look at the personnel Arnsparger had. He didn't have to blitz.
