re: Who was LSU's last "freak" (athlete)?

I would classify him as more than a bull--I would go with the "rare super athlete" bit.
Again look at his numbers, and Florida game. Just because he was a workhorse doesn't mean he wasn't stellar. In reality, Faulk, too , was a workhorse.

there are lots of 230 lb guys who run 4.65s

agreed. But there aren't a lot of players to suit up in P and G eclipsing what he did.

and 2 of those are the most physically demanding (CB and PR)
so what, what was his 40?
thats all that matters
Clayton played 3 positions at LSU, if u are counting PR. and could have played basketball as well. Spears played 2 positions, and could have played basketball.
is that not as impressive as Cassanova?

i haven't really changed it. i've posted like 10-15 guys
dude, you set the precedent by mentioning Cassanova as someone who was athletic enough to play 5 positions on the football field.
is this hard to follow?
You said he was a great athlete because of WHAT HE DID ON THE FIELD.
and in the next breath you start spouting off great athletes who had combine #'s, and even praise the great Steven Korte.
you cant see the difference in that?
Cassanova= great athlete by what he did on the field
Korte= great athlete because of his great workout. Didnt play a meaningful play at LSU

still don't know the definition...
would champ bailey be one? if not, then lsu hasn't had any in a while

he played CB for 1 half of 1 game and was toast vs the legend

not at the same time. he started at TE and moved to DE where he played for 3.5 years
spears was 6-3. he wasn't goin to play basketball for a major program.

i had to assume he was an amazing athlete to get the publicity he did and play CB at an effective level

it's an estimation based on where he played

Which is exactly what this thread is NOT about.
"Freak athlete" does not equal "best career" "favorite Tiger" or "best with what he had" . Hester had a fairly common skill set, a good runner, a good pair of hands, solid blocker, able to get the short yards when ya need it, etc...He had a rather uncommon work ethic and desire, but that is NOT what this thread is about.

and what if he only ran a 4.6?
Posted on 8/9/09 at 1:07 pm to Lester Earl
then he wasn't a freak athlete
it's not a hard concept

and 2 of those are the most physically demanding (CB and PR)
quote:Obviously the ability to thrive at multiple physically demanding positions is not a qualifier (Davis and Faulk at RB and KR/PR; Webster at WR and CB; Jones at Safety, CB and P; etc.).
we've had CBs play for LSU who ran 4.65s recently
quote:That is a set group of numbers. A 200 pound guy has to have A, B and C; a 225 pound guy has to have X, Y and Z; with no flexibility for being super freakish in one area and just barely un-freakish in another area, or flexibility for immeasurables (or even measurables not measured by the combine). That's set numbers.
the criteria is not some set group of #s. you will have different matrices for a 200 lb guy compared to a 250 lb guy compared to a 290 lb guy

HOKIE G. WAS A FREAK! the guy was once said to have squated close to 1500lbs
Posted on 8/9/09 at 1:09 pm to SlowFlowPro
so do u think its fair to say "who was LSU last freak athlete since Tommy Casanova" without knowing any of Casanova's combine numbers, since you seem to weigh so heavily on that by judging these other players athleticism?

I think this is one of those threads where SFP doesn't properly define his terms, has already made up his mind, and just shoots down everyone's suggestions for 6+ pages.
Excellent prediction. OK, it was obvious because that is the standard SFP thread, but you were the first to make the call.

Tyrus Thomas comes to mind.
Posted on 8/9/09 at 1:11 pm to SlowFlowPro
quote:He was an amazing athlete (maybe still is). But the definition of "freak" you are using has nothing to do with the kind of amazing athleticism it takes to get publicity and play CB at an effective level. You even specifically dismissed playing CB as a qualifier because CBs are "slow" at LSU (despite being All-Americans and playing in the NFL, apparently they weren't "athletic").

are we all tiger fans here? im guessing we have forgotten about joe addai?
Posted on 8/9/09 at 1:15 pm to Baloo
this was an honest question and indy answered it
the rest was mostly filled with vague commentary based around the theme that LSU fans hate athleticism

quote:That's funny. So a guy who's 202 pounds, has a 65 inch vertical, benches 50 reps of 550#s, broad jumps 19 feet, runs a 1.15 second 10 yard dash, wouldn't be a "freak" athlete because he only ran a 4.6 40.
then he wasn't a freak athlete

well with all the other weight to look at, it would be hard to say otherwise
with those stats he's be playing LB or DE so a 4.6 isn't that bad
