somewhere in this chain someone said athleticism = physical ability
i disagree with that to some extent. physical ability - to me - refers to very raw measurables like squat, 40 time, frame, etc
athletic ability relies on physical ability but also includes unmeasurable things. some kids can just hit a damn curve ball with ease 370 ft. they could become "physical freaks" and it wouldnt help their ability to do this.. in fact it may take away if anything.

well i already said i don't lump arm strength in, but if you want to then he's certainly a freak
this also applies to chad jones

Of course, Lynn Swann had no athleticism because they had no combine to measure it. That ability to leap up through defenders arms, turn a pirouette, catch the ball with one hand, and contort his body to extend his feet and just drag his toes inside the sideline -- that's not "athleticism." No, "athleticism" can only be shown by running 40 yards in straight lines, jumping up and down repeatedly, and laying on a bench pushing a weighted bar up and down over your chest.

actually it is
they measure the mph of the ball when guys throw

quote:Okay, so you're not simply being irrationally arbitrary enough to only accept combine reports as "athleticism," you are being even more irrationally arbitrary so as to even exclude some of them and only accept a limited selection of combine events. Awesome.
actually it is

quote:quote:well then you're an idiot and don't understand what athleticism is
If a person has great measureables (speed and strength), but is not a good player of sports, I do not classify them as a great athlete.

it's not about his play on the field at all

you can be a good player and mediocre athlete
you can be a good athlete and mediocre player
the 2 are completely different things
I wonder, Slow, if you could find one instance of the word "athleticism" -- other than by you in this thread or in earlier mistakes -- where it is used with a meaning that specifically excludes reaction speed, hand eye coordination, timing, and any ability whatsoever to perform well in a sport?
It is pretty clear that you have chosen to invent a completely new word by taking the term "athleticism", casting aside it's previously existing and universal meaning, and replacing that meaning with the meaning of the phrase "results of measurements of performance in a specific set of physical tasks". And then, of course, pretended to be smarter than all the people who actually know what the term athleticism means.

Well King Joey,
You have laid it out for all to see. I suspect there is not one reader of this site that would not agree with you, except for the all-knowing and delusional SFP.
He is unable to admit that he is wrong.
Any truely smart person has the ability to admit their mistakes.
Not too surprising that the guy that thinks that a person can be a freak athlete, but not be able to excel in the sport they play...also fails to understand that you can be a smart person and still admit when you are wrong.

1 Maravich
2 Shaq
3 Casanova
4 Chris Jackson
5 Cannon
Old School -Tinsley
Honorable mention -Y.A., Bert Jones
MAYBE could have been -Cecil, RP(actually never did anything) so he just gets mentioned as a very, very long shot that really doesnt belong on a list with the others, this goes for the diesel too. No time line here just what I considered freak ability. Maravich may be "the freak of all time anywhere",and he definatly wasnt the fastest or strongest.

it's quite funny that SFP is the subject expert on overall athletic ability when he has none of it himself, nor has he ever played any kind of organized sport.
beasts, freaks, whatever...
this thread is a joke.

so when you say, "man that kid is athletic" you mean "man that kid is a really good player"
?
that's insane. i've NEVER heard people use athletic in that sense in real conversations
