As far as football knowledge, Arnsparger gives him a run for the money and might actually have the edge. I agree, he can't hold a candle to Nick on the whole building a program "process" deal. He was a brilliant tactical coach, though.

Les Miles. He was there my entire time at LSU and made for some damn good games and memories.

Nick Saban with no close seconds.

I agree. People hate on Saban because he's at Bama now, but he could've built LSU into a dynasty had he stayed in Baton Rouge.

As I get older, I appreciate Stovall a lot more than I did as a kid. He was in pretty much a no win situation and he, at the very least, presided over some exciting teams. He wasn't "good" per se, but he was interesting. The Stovall years were gloriously insane, even if they probably killed my father.

But Les will always be my favorite. He was just a guy who got it. Football is a game and it's supposed to be fun. He appreciated the whole college football experience in a way few coaches do.

Dude was literally working at a bank when he was handed the reins of a big time college football program. It's hard to fathom today.

The '82 team was phenomenal, but had those two head-scratcher late season losses to MissSt and Tulane. Then he just collapsed the next year.

tGoat at LSU during the height of SEC dominance:
#1 Win%
#1 NC trophies (tie)
#1 NC appearances
#1 SEC titles (tie)
#1 SECW titles (tie)
#1,2,3 in PPG
#1,2,4,5 Scoring
#1,2,3,4 Offensive TDs (the offense everybody complains about)

Plenty more in '17 Media guide

Even during "tDecline" he had a better W% than most other coaching tenures

Les. Arnsperger is the most underrated

Agreed. He was a very good HC while at LSU. The thing I remember about his teams was that they seemed to always play with a poise akin to that of pro teams. And he had a brilliant defensive mind. It's a shame he didn't stay longer. Had he not left for the Florida AD job, he could have built a stellar record at LSU.
