Smoke could be better compared to Mike Archer, who took over a successful program and was mildly successful early, but eventually took huge steps backward. I actually think Archer was worse for the program than Curly, because Arnsbarger had us at a pretty high level when he left.

Smoke is a good coach, just not the right fit for headcoach, least at LSU. Comparing him to Hallman is insulting. When I was out there, players would say how with Hallman, in his last couple of years, everyone just stood around, joked, and didn't take things seriously at all, least of all conditioning. Ironic, considering the 'crazy 'bout Curely' crap started because of Hallman's conditioning program.

Archer has had a long successful career as an assistant coach, Curly has had a long career as failure in every field of endeavor he has attempted. I think Deitzel hired him, if he did he undid the good he accomplished as a coach. Zero sum.

Believe it or not, Hallman left the program with much more talent then when he arrived. Archer can not say the same. Neither were worth defending. Smoke inherited the best program in the nation and destroyed it in four years. They all stunk.

Actually the "epicenter of suckage" was the man who hired three of our candidates (Archer, Brady, Curley), along with Dinardo who he hired after he tried to hire the equally incompetent Pat Sullivan and could not handle his buyout. This is a man who thankfully was made a go-fer by Emmert when we hired Saban.

I give you the King of Suckage, the incomparable, and unforgivable, Joe Dean.

Most ppl in this thread are wrong. Arnsparger was the one that ran the program down talent wise. Arnsparger didn't recruit one lick. In fact the only time he ever left campus was to go interview for the Florida AD job or has he said just going to talk. Archer was a good recruiter his mistake was he put too much emphasis on recruiting texas. He turned his back on alot of Louisiana recruits. His gamble bit him in the arse when a bunch of the high profile recruits didn't panout. Nigel Ventress a LB from Houston is one that I recall. He got some crazy idea that he couldn't compete with the Miami's of the world with La talent. Archer was just too young and overwhelmed by the job. Curly could recruit but thats all he could do. If you look all throu LSU history sure their are down years recruiting, but for the most part talent has never been the problem. Its been poor coaching that has cost LSU.

I don't think Arnsparger did too bad. Let's see, he won when he was coach. He left enough talent at LSU for Archer to go 10-1-1 in his first year. He left enough talent for Archer to win a SEC title in his second year. All the mistakes and "gambles" Archer took with recruiting are on him. If he did not think he could win big with Louisiana talent, he was a bigger fool then I give him credit for being. For the record, when Sol Graves is named a starting QB at LSU, your talent is down. PS. Just think how much faster things would have crashed under Archer if Hodson wasn't there.

Plus ONE MILLION. He embarrassed this program on and off the field like no other. His poor hiring of football coaches destroyed our all time winning percentages.

The question is who was the worst speller/user of the English language on Tiber Droppings? That would be you Chill Pill. The correct use of the English language is "who was the worst, not worse."

Now go bsck to grammer school and learn yo grammer. :rotflmao:

Are you talking about the great Curley that once said:
"You got to take the piece of leather AND do something with it."

My buddy and I still use that gem of coaching wisdom.
