Obviously it was a mistake or an error, but the majority of the time a "mental" mistake/error won't be scored as an error the way a physical mistake/error (dropping a popup, kicking a ground ball, etc) would be.

I am not arguing with anyone that the majority of the time it is ruled a hit. I have said that it is ruled that way most of the time. Go back and read the posts. I clearly stated that I don't think it should be. I think it should be an error. However, the other guy said I was wrong and 100% of the time a ball that doesn't touch anyone's glove is ruled a hit, which couldn't be any more wrong.

So this means that it SHOULD be ruled a hit. Or does that mean, in your opinion, there is nothing else better to score it as??
In some case yes. If it is clear who should have made the play, like was the case last night, then by all means call an error. But if it lands right in the middle of three people you can't really tell who should or should not have made the play.

Right. I agree with you on this. Some people on here don't seem to agree if it "doesn't hit the fielder's glove" which is the dumbest thing I have ever heard.

I agree and like we have already talked about, sometimes this is ruled a hit and sometimes it is not. I have seen the closest fielder get the error. I have seen the fielder that should have been the one to catch it given the error. I have also seen it ruled a hit, and I will even say more often than not. My opinion is still that it should be an error on someone, you shouldn't just rule it a hit because you don't feel it is fair to assign the error to a particular player.
I also believe they should have a team error.

if you cant give it to someone it should just be a stolen base. Like the dropped 3rd strike rule.

A dropped third strike isn't a stolen base.

last time i looked at scoring rules, if the 3rd strike is dropped and the runner reaches base it is ruled a strikeout and a stolen base. has this been changed?

No it's usually a wild pitch or a passed ball.

That has never been the case.
A dropped third strike is an 0-1 with a strikeout for the batter and the pitcher is credited with a strikeout and a wild pitch which accounts for the runner reaching first base. No batter has ever been credited with a stolen base for reaching first base on a strike out.
ETA: Cub is also right, it could also be ruled a passed ball if it is on the catcher.

Honestly, if the hitter actually hits the ball and reaches base, I think he should get a hit - regardless of whatever the fielder(s) do(es).

So you're saying there should be no errors?

i say get rid of check swings. You either swing or you don't swing.

TigerCub - you follow the Cubs pretty close? I am a huge Cubs fan. Planning a trip to Seattle with the wife this year and we will be going the week of July 4. The Cubs just so happen to be there, so we will be catching a game at Safeco.

And if you don't, it's a freakin ball - regardless of where the pitch is located.
