Nobody here really saw him play at LSU.

I did, every home game including freshman year

I’d say Shaq, only because he’s more recent

Both are greatly revered.
The Pistol will always be #1.

You can only shake your head in wonder at the miracle that was Pete Maravich.

In an LSU-Kentucky game, "Pistol" Pete Maravich scored 64 points against Kentucky's Dan Issel, who scored 51

Pete is like Cannon... They are statues and names on buildings. The older fans know them well. The middle aged fans know the nostalgia. The younger fans only know the names. Shaq is a currently high level celebrity. That is exactly how I would answer. Shaq has more celebrity. Pete has more reverence.

Well put. How many generations of NBA players emulate Shaq’s game or watch his videos to learn to play? CPIII said he learned to handle the ball in his basement watching Pete videos. LeBron James underhand pass, I can go on and on. He was as popular as most rock stars while in college.

Players still talk about him. He changed the game. It is today what he envisioned and played like 50 years ago.

There is no denying Shaq is more popular because of his marketing team and personality. Pete has 10 times the “LORE” at LSU. Shaq was the third best player on his freshman team. His teams didn’t do a damn thing either in the tourney so I would leave that out as an argument to say he did more. They had a ton more talent.

Screw you. I saw Pistol's first game, he scored 65. He was a magician, no-one else was even close, then, or now.
Shaq was great too, but totally different. If Shaq was 6'5", he wouldn't have played college basketball, no real skill set.
Now, as far as an ambassador for LSU, Shaq is the greatest.

So true. And after Pistol, the best stats by a Tiger were probably held by HOFer Bob Pettit, who I also never saw, but has to be included in the collected lore.

The Pistol

He died early. leaving behind a mythological legacy

The younger generations know Shaq more as a celeb, ad pitch man, sports commentator. Not so much for his dominating NBA days
