re: Who honestly believes our defense was "fixed" this year?

Without reading 4 pages, fixed? No. Better. Yes.
The question I have is how would our defense have been if our offense were able to sustain drives and score points? I think that would have improved the entire defense for several reasons. Obviously, the players would remain fresher. But one has to think that some of the defensive play calls would be different if, say, we have a 17 point lead versus trying to keep things close so our offense has a chance to win the game. And if your offense can score points and get a lead, it forces the other team to become more one dimensional, which would benefit our defense.
That said, I think our defense was a little too predictible. Rarely did you see a blitz that you didn't know was coming (i.e. Cutrera up the middle or Coleman from the edge). How about some corner blitzes, or sending Chad Jones from his safety spot? I thought the safeties played too far back. However, linebacker play was much improved this year. KS went from goat last year to one of our best defensive players this year.
But our defense has got to do a better job of not just keeping the other team out of the end zone, but getting the ball back via punt and/or turnover. I still think some of that blame goes back to our offense's inability to sustain drives and light up the scoreboard.

There were definitely some bright spots. But all in all I'm not a fan of Chavis's approach.
What we saw this year is consistent with his track record over 14 yrs at Tenn. If we think there's going to a sudden upshoot in DL talent next year and the following most of us are in for a rude awakening.

In 2008 opposing offenses scored 32 TDs.
In 2009 opposing offenses scored 19 TDs.
I dont know if that's a fix...but its damn sure ALOT better.

and our D was filled with veterans. hawkins, woods, alexander, alem, jones, sheppard, riley, etc
Our DL was TERRIBLE and Our Offense ensured our opponents got the ball A LOT. Yet, we didn't get absolutely scorched.
Honestly, Given those facts, it should have been a pretty rough year defensively.

Compared to what?
If you are looking back at Saban defenses no way.
Ours is Ok hopefully some new talented DL men will help it somewhat.

I don't know if fixed would be the word I would use, but it is much better. I can live with everything that Chavis has done except one. There is no excuse for the lack of a pass rush. Outside of that I think the defense would have been alot better if not for the huge difference on offensive vs. defensive total plays. If not for so many 3 and outs the D would be ranked much higher.

the main issues that caused major problems in 2008 were largely "fixed". That doesn't mean the defense is as good as it can be. You can't expect a new coordinator to turn it around in one year, especially with limited talent on the line.

The defense was better this season, but it got over-hyped from the Florida game. Sure Florida only scored 13 points, but the fact of the game was they were trying to play ball control offense and get out of there doing as little as possible to get the win with a not 100% Tebow. They only had 7 true possessions in the game and drove down the field on us in 5 of them. This may be preaching to the choir, but the Florida game really over-rated the defense this season from people that only watch the scoreboard.

Plus as far as points allowed per game:
2003 = 11

2008 = 24.2

the problem was our scoring per game
2003 = 33.9
2007 = 38.7
2008 = 30.9
2009 = 24.8

Again, thank you Chad Jones.

The offense could not start a drive. Way to many sacks, option the short side of the field, 3 and short where the back could not get 1 or 2 yards running the ball, stupid penalties, etc.

If our Offensive ranking matched our Def ranking where would we be?
