Offense has an effect on your defense, especially from a "statistic" and "ranking" mentality...do you refute that?

yes and no, between the 20's yes, 20's on in No, i agree with an earlier post that coaching has improved, but yes we are lacking the depth and talent on the Dline, also i still wonder why on 3-7 we give the other team 9 yards cushions to run button routes on us all day and move the sticks, its like we are scared of the deep threat way to often, we have the man back there that lays down the punishment, they should be scared of our anit-deep threat missile aka Chad Jones

Better, but we're not there just yet.

High note: scoring defense was ranked 12th (I believe). Can't win unless you keep teams out of the endzone, and we did a decent job on that front this year.

Low note: everything you said + terrible blitz packages and QB rush. I don't think we faced a QB this year that genuinely feared LSU's D. That's not the level of intimidation that I'd like to continue taking into big games; especially against good QB's.

During one of the final Gameday broadcasts, Herbstreit made an interesting comment, saying that "a good QB rush is the best pass defense a team can have". I think there's some wisdom in that statement. To really return to dominance on the defensive side of the ball, our QB rush must improve.

Scoring D was 12th.

Defense did well enough for LSU to win. Offense was just crap. Total defense was a bit unsettling

I have no problem with the scoring defense as it was if the offense could pick up the slack.

nope, so not having tons of Interceptions like last year makes this year seem much better than it was. Dont get me wrong, last years D was horrendous, but they were put in WAY more tough situations than this years D was.

All depends on perspective and what your goals are.

Against the backdrop of '08 we did well. Compared to '03 long way to go (and I don't think our talent level was that much inferior to '03's).

D gave us some gems and a chance to win but dominant (my dream) we were not.

The defense was better and for now, I'll take that. Before I condemn it, I want to see how well it can do with an actual offense.

Gave us TD's in the Washington, Miss. State and Ole Miss games.

12th in scoring D with 16 pts./game. Points wins ball games, not yards.

If we can't score 17/game, we don't deserve win.

and our D was filled with veterans. hawkins, woods, alexander, alem, jones, sheppard, riley, etc

Hawkins was solid, as was most of the secondary.
Woods- Meh. Never really panned out
Alexander- Seriously? He's play like 4 games in 12 years at LSU.
Alem- Not that it matters, but he was basically held ALL season. I've seen multiple times where his jersey literally almost got ripped off and there was no flag.
Jones/Sheppard/Riley- What's the issue with them? I thought they all played well.

Agreed. Defense did its job. Offense let LSU down, big time.

I also blame this on the d line. None of our d line forced a double team leaving plenty of blockers to pick up blitz.

I'm hopeful for next season given the improvement this year. Fixed? No. Highly improved and expected to be fixed next year? Yes.

no, it was 12th. pretty close to your friggin' top 10 standard. it also kept us in EVERY GAME WE PLAYED. if our offense would have kept the ball longer, all of our D's stats would have improved, but screw the stats, our D was fixed. i honestly believe that. to go further, anyone that doesn't recognize our problem was the offense, it's inability to make yardage, first downs, score points and keep our D off the field is either blind, dumb or stirring some shite.

Yeah, that. The defense did all you could expect. lack of depth at corner cost us the bama game, but not a coaching problem.

Goal-line stands were definitely fixed.
