Not quite the same thing but weddings are scheduled on purpose.
"A man had 50 yard line tickets for a LSU game.
As he sat down, he noticed that the seat next to him was empty.
He asked the man on the other side of the empty seat whether anyone was sitting there.
"No," the man replied, "The seat is empty."
"This is incredible," said the first man.
"Who in their right mind would have a seat like this for the LSU game, the biggest sporting event in the state and not use it?"
The second man replied, "Well, actually, the seat belongs to me. I was supposed to come with my wife, but she passed away. This will be the first LSU game we haven't attended together since we got married in 1967."
"Oh, I'm sorry to hear that. That's terrible. But couldn't you find someone else -- a friend or relative, or even a neighbor to take the seat?"
The man shook his head. "No, they're all at the funeral.""

Send them a nice gift afterwards to make them remember the gift instead of you not being there
I honestly remember gifts more than seeing the people at my wedding anyways

I've been in this situation. Had a wedding to go to for the 07 Florida game. Everyone ended up at the open bat during the reception and someone from the wedding party walked in and started screaming at everyone. Literally everyone turned around and was just like "what did you expect?" They had to move the cutting of cake and speech to the bar area where the TVs were.

She surprised me by having Hey Fighting Tigers played as we marched back up the aisle, instead of the traditional wedding music.
Trashy.

My wife and I had friends who had to get married in the fall but wisely chose to have their wedding on a Sunday.
yeah, the Sunday where the eventual 2009 Superbowl Champion New Orleans Saints performed one of the best comebacks in Saint history defeating the Miami Dolphins on the road to extend their then undefeated season.

Tell your wife to go alone. It should be an all female congregation anyway.

Simple solution......fire the direct report before the wedding

Had to be IN a wedding for a wife's friend last year on Auburn game day. I was so mad for a very long time. Wife wouldn't let me decline. Worst part is, the groom turned out to be a total abusive scumbag and is now out on bond for DV.

skip the wedding and show up to the reception for free food.

I watched the second half of the Auburn game on the father of the bride's cell phone while we were waiting on them to get done taking pictures. At least they had the decency to do the wedding at halftime.

Alright frick stick. If you've ever been to an LSU football game you know it's more than just a football game. it's a chance to relive old memories, see old friends, and enjoy some great Louisiana culture. And it only happens 7 times a year and it's only been getting more difficult and cheapened by a greedy administration. There are 52 weekends to get married. I understand there's other factors but I don't think it's that asinine to be upset at this. LSU football games are a huge investment for a lot of people and a much needed break from life's stresses.
ETA: 50% of marriages end in divorce but college football fandom is forever.
