re: Who do you consider to be the biggest bust in LSU football history?

I listed Arik Gilbert as an one of the biggest busts b/c he was a top 10 rated player, top TE prospect ever (to date), amazing size and athleticism and his LSU career consisted of eight games and 368 yards. Yes, he booked all that as a freshman, but he was given a bunch of PT and then went off the deep end.
Ended up with an impressive criminal career, though..

Anthony Johnson.
Ran into him before last year's Super Bowl, seems to be doing well. He said life is good got his degree from LSU and Super Bowl ring with the Patriots.

How do you start to compare a two year starter who played in 45 games to say, another 5 star safety in Marcel Brooks ?
Brooks wasn't even a unanimous S during his recruitment much less was he considered the top safety in his class like Loston was. I would probably start there.

I could blind test you on Loston & Chad Jones & you wouldn’t be able to tell the difference lol.
Similar college resume but not as highly touted as Loston out of HS.

This is my vote and what's bad about this one is he probably would've ended up as an all time great for LSU at that time had he completed his career. Wasn't a bust because he didn't perform but rather never got the chance outside winning us the SEC title to show how good he really was. It took LSU awhile to recover losing him as well.

Brooks was recruited to lsu to play safety & was a 5 star. Your answer sucks, and that’s ok.
Chad jones is universally lauded as a great player at lsu. Where he was ranked is not the point.

Busts are not just determined by their accomplishments but rather their accomplishments compared to the expectations. Fair or not, it's a reality.
Failing to live up to expectations is not being a bust. A bust completely fails to contribute.

This still haunts me how poorly utilized he was used for LSU. He just happened to be a smaller dual threat QB in the wrong era.
Imagine if we recruited him in 2025 in this day and age of football.
He should be grateful for Les converting him to a WR. He had zero shot of making it as a QB

Sage Ryan was big time 5 star and flailed around the field every season here.

Arik Gilbert, Gunnar Kiel

all SEC qb his first year at LSU
He underperformed in my opinion because he has an OL has his qb / OC coach, who had no idea what he was doing.

Russell Shepard was never going to be a power 4 college QB. His high school highlights were 75% runs. Great athlete…not a great QB.

MS was right up there for sure, but I think through the years LSU has recruited several OL that proved to be anything but elite, even though they played a lot, just because LSU was in need of big bodies. No reason to name them.

Mark Ippoletto (sp?)
Stud LB who was always academically ineligible.

Late 90s pull here but Thomas Dunson was supposed to be the next Mike Singletary. Combined with Lou Tepper (im jacked, u ready?!?) it made for a pretty big bust

Booty was starting QB and was all SEC one year.
That's not a bust.
His personality is another matter.

Upon review it is definitely Travonte Valentine. Huge ratings, little to no production and problems everywhere.
