Virginia Tech was I-AA in my lifetime. I don't know when they moved to "big boy" football, but they used to play the likes of William & Mary and VMI.

I go with Auburn, at least in football. It has a culture that isdifferent, which was likely forced due to the fact that it’s in the same state as Bama. Not A&M different, but still unique.
The other close comparison is always being seen in Bama’s shadow in football. However, these are the two programs that have had notable periods of success against them this century and have competed for and won titles.
UGA is certainly a power right now and has its title, but they definitely lack the head to head success vs Bama. That championship win was massive, but they just can’t seem to beat them outside of that one time, and just got punked again even though Saban is gone.
Also, UGA seems a lot more generic of a football atmosphere and culture than either LSU or Auburn. I don’t see us being like UGA at all in this regard, especially historically.

I can't tell if you are serious, but there is no comparison.
There’s certainly the obvious one with OSU- we are the only major P5 programs in our states and use the “State” tag. That is a unique situation compared to a lot of states that have two P5s, where the “University of,” is typically the bigger of the two schools. I think the comparisons pretty much end here, though.
And yes, I know Cincy is now technically a P5, but that’s a recent change and they aren’t what they were a few years ago anymore. Historically, LSU and OSU share a similar situation.

And possibly Virginia Tech.
In sports success, there’s obviously no comparison. None whatsoever. And their fan base is a lot smaller than LSU’s, as passionate as they are.
However, VT stands out as unique because you have a fan base that comes from an area that’s different than most other places. Same with West VA. Appalachia is its own little world with its own accents, slang and culture, the same way NOLA and SW LA are different than anywhere else. West VA was historically seen as a very difficult place to play with very hostile fans the same way that LSU was in earlier decades when not every fan base was like that in the stadium.
But the comparisons end here. Both are smaller programs with smaller fan bases and far less success across the board.

Which other school is most comparable to LSU..
Michigan.
Good Athletics and when the stars align they can win Nattys. One of the better programs in a power conference but outshined by OSU (Bama for us).

Sort of. The league didn't really exist in 86 though they strung people along for a bit.

They decided to hire Archer primarily because Arnsparger recommended him. Ironically (or maybe not) Arnsparger was the Florida AD who hired Spurrier in 1990.
Initially, it looked like a good move, Archer went 10-1-1. LSU's first 10-win and top-5 season since Paul Dietzel's final season in 1961 (10-1). It would be almost 10 years before another 10-win season and over 15 before another top 5 finish.
Recruiting was his downfall, I think, not coaching.

I always think of Auburn.
They will randomly go undefeated and win a national championship out of nowhere.
They have won and lost on very fluke plays
Prayer at JH
Kick Six
4th and 31
Earthquake Game
2016 LSU ending with the TD taken away
2007 Flynn to Byrd with :01 to go

Yea. They have only 8 more national titles and are ranked 3rd compared to LSU's 15th in all-time wins.
