Having a set coaching philosophy and recruiting players and assistant coaches that fit that philosophy?

Or

Recruiting/drafting the best possible players and coach to their strengths?

I view Nick Saban as the former. Les Miles would also fall into that category.

And Coach O as the latter. I think coaches like Steve Sarkisian, Chris Peterson, and Mark Richt also fall into that same category.

In college the former, professionally the latter.

Nick Saban is the ultimate example of why the former proves the more useful in college. Read his biography to see why the former approach also doesn’t work in the professional systems.

I suppose there is a litany of coaches that prove your point. Lloyd Carr, Harbaugh, Shaw, Woody Hayes (Until Bo got to UM), Saban, Spurrier, Mack Brown. Lots of coaches.

I guess it also depends on said philosophy.

Nick Saban has changed a lot to fit his talent. He would be the latter.

Les = COED Tang Chaser. Hence, why Ole Boy didn’t realize it wasn’t 1975 anymore.

I had to laugh when I saw Les's name. Granite head came to mind.

of course a coach has to have a scheme/philosophy on both sides of the ball, and try to recruit players to fit that scheme.

But when the coaches find out later that the talent doesn't fit, or there's injuries, suspensions, transfers, etc., then the coaches have to adjust on the fly and change the scheme to fit the players.

You need a philosophy of some kind, but getting the best possible players is more important.

No he hasn’t. Saban changed to fit the changing times, but he still has a system, and he recruits players that fit his system.

Saban signs the best players in the country every year and teaches them his system. He both has a set philosophy and recruits the best possible players. However, instead of changing his philosophy to fit the players, he is an elite coach with the most elite that he doesn’t have to choose one over the other

Doesn’t matter as long as we are multiple and run the Joe Brady offense

And field a defense that looks better than they ever did under Aranda

His offense changes yearly. Defense not so much.

He doesn’t recruit to fit a system. He recruits the best talent.

Does he have a mindset/philosophy he sticks to? Yes.

But an actual system in terms of his offense/defense. No

I live in a town where the High School has run the same offense for decades. Sucks in the years where we lack just the right talent.

Adapt and coach to your players strengths.

That’s a tough one. Except for Sabin, I think most coaches base every season on the talent on the field. It will vary every few years based on recruiting. Sabin will get enough quality players that fit his preferences. If a 5* falls in your lap, you do not turn him away, even if he may not perfectly fit.
