re: Which coach would you rather lead your program, Dabo or BK?

A year ago BK was talking about how LSU wasn't in the business of buying players. Now he is begging fans to donate money so they can outbid Oregon. He Before this year, he talked bout how he didn't want to build through the portal. This year he took 18 guys from the portal and 40% of the starters might be portal guys.
Look at the difference between talk and ACTIONS. How many portal players were taken leading into 22 and 23? BK did try to switch more toward HS and rely less on the portal last year, but he’s obviously done a 180 since then after it lead to inexperience and depth issues last year.
But the “mindset” you talk about is still not even fricking close. Dabo outright REFUSED to use the portal at all for years and double and tripled down on that. BK used it immediately here even if he didn’t want to long-term because he had to. He was at least willing to be flexible in his mindset, and then when trying to go very light on the portal last year didn’t work, he adjusted again. Just think about how bad 2022 could have been here with Dabo at the helm with his stubbornness on the portal, especially then.
As for recruiting, we reportedly offered Underwood over $6 million over 4 years. BK can say we weren’t buying players, but we obviously were. I’m sure Jackson and Berry had huge deals for their positions, as well. That Underwood deal was worked out before that quote about not buying players in May of 2024. If you want to call BK out for being a liar and hypocrite, be my guest, but there was a shift in how we were offering NIL starting early in the 2025 class process.
Again, the mindset of he and Dabo when it comes to recruiting, NIL and the portal are absolutely nothing alike. Not even remotely close.

No, I don't have a strong opinion about this debate on either side. I'll probably have a stronger opinion after this year. I don't think it's outrageous for someone to pick either one at this point in time.

I think this is hard to compare because they were in such different situations. Kelly was going to a school that drastically needed a roster overhaul. He didn't have an option but to use the portal. At that point in time Dabo had a program that had won 10+ games every season for the previous 11 years. He felt that he could get by without using the portal. I think at that point in time BK had the mindset that he wanted to get the roster in a spot to where he could have that same strategy of not having to use the portal.

I don't disagree with any of this.

I think at one point they were. Obviously it's different now, even though Dabo has started to use the portal a little bit.

Interestingly, the thread subject and responses seem to beg the question, how would Clemson fans respond here?
I think the vast majority of them would pick Dabo...

Both have their flaws. I'd take CBK because he is just a great D-line away

The argument is that that time has seemingly passed him by and he hasn't adapted in a manner that gives hope that he will bring them back to that level.
Well as you pointed out, they just made the playoffs, are ranked Top 5,and has a sleu of projected first round draft picks. I think he is doing fine. I understand he might not be well adjusted to NIL as others. He is also about 10 years younger than Kelly.
All that being said, I am not sure if I would take Dabo over Kelly.

It's a dead heat until Saturday August 30th.

I think everyone that makes threads like these should be given an opportunity to coach a game. Why.... because we have at least 50+ D1 caliber head coaches around this place.

There's so much more to coaching then gameday managing. There's recruiting managing rosters, donors, players, coaches. Honestly as far a a gameday coach, I honestly think I could be as good or better than BK, calling timely time outs / 4th down attempts, just general game strategy, I really dont think he has a great feel that. As far as recruiting, coaching, and just dealing with a bunch of 18-22 year old college kids not so much lol.

You’re only as good as your last envelope.

Half the folks here don't even know what an RPO is.
If someone here discussed gameplanning or something of the sort with even a "dumb" coach like O, they'd be overwhelmed in about a minute.

Sure. I never said it didn't work. I'm just pointing out that a year ago he said that LSU wasn't in the business of buying players and now they are. I'm not mad about it.
He said they didn't want players whose sole objective was to cash a check, that was the point of not being in the business of "buying players".
There's obviously a difference in making a competitive offer and just buying a player (like Evan Stewart).

Any fan who says he'd rather Kelly coach us against a top-tier team like Clemson at Clemson week 1 over a coach like Dabo is lying to himself and others.
Yeah, you can’t pick against the guy who had one of the two dominant teams of the decade. But they are close, imo.
