After the dumpster fire that Auburn was last year, it's quite an accomplishment to even be playing for a shot in the SEC Championship game against Alabama, let alone playing them to overtime. Field goal return be damned.

Even before the Iron Bowl he had taken an unranked team to a top ten position in the polls.

So he hasn't won an national championship or an SEC championship with his current team (that he's been with for quite a while), and he's better than Miles?

makes sense

What has Duke ever done before or after Spurrier? He won a conference title there.

What was Florida before Spurrier got there? He had the most dominant stretch in SEC history while there, yes, more dominant stretch than the Bear.

What was South Carolina before Spurrier got there? He has them finishing in the top 10 for back to back years.

Now flip the coin...

What was Oklahoma St before Les Miles got there? Not much, and he made them respectable, but the guy after him has improved on what Les left him.

What was LSU before Les Miles got here? 2 SEC titles in the previous 4 years, 1 national title two years prior. Has Miles maintained it, sure.

But anyone that looks at a career of coaching and thinks that Les Miles is a better coach than Steve Spurrier is foolish.

I have him at #2. You can make an argument he is as low as 3 behind Spurrier given the HBC's career success.. Even though Miles dominates the frick out of every Spurrier team he faces.

Anything beyond 3rd and you're probably just really fricking stupid.

Put him at three. No way I can rate Les ahead of Saban or Spurrier.

There are probably another four coaches (Gus Malzahn, James Franklin, Hugh Freeze, Gary Pinkell) we'll have to keep an eye on and see how they develop their programs.

Miles is the 2nd best recruiter in the SEC

He's prob the 4th or 5th in terms of gameplanning, and gameday coaching .

I agree with this. I also believe that you have to look at all parts of the job when judging the coach. You have to take the good with the bad, and Les' good outweighs his bad.

Prime example, Bobby Petrino will embarrass Les Miles in a battle of X's and O's, and calling an offensive game. However there is more to being a head coach than that, and I'm not sure that Petrino can recruit both sides of the ball and run his program in a manner as good as Miles.

It doesn't make one a negatiger to see that Miles does has some faults.

Career maybe not, but present day I think you can make an argument.

There could be debate, sure. But when talking currently, you have to ask which program is easier to win at, South Carolina or LSU? And then you can't ignore that Spurrier has the Gamecocks ready for 2 top 10 finishes in a row. LSU won't finish in the top 10 either of those seasons.

I can see the arguement for Les at current times, but others have suggested that it's not even close, and that just ain't true.

Spurrier is more interested in playing golf than recruiting now days. Still what he has done at Duke, Florida & USCe is pretty impressive.

And why is LSU easier to win at? The talent that gets here is a direct reflection on Miles. That talent wanting to come here is a direct reflection on Miles.

And since they've both been in the SEC Miles has done more.

None of that discounts what Spurrier has done over his career. He is an all time great.
