re: Where did Miles go wrong?

Once he acknowledged that a change is needed in the offense last year, said he went places to study some spread concepts and then came back this year, in his first game with the exact same inept offense.
Fans now feel betrayed. Its over. He has no trust and no leeway anymore.
Les Miles is a good guy but once you say you are going to do something and you flat out don't. You gawn.
Alleva must feel like he was lied to after acknowledging that he talked with Les and both agreed the offense needs to change. Surprise.... Same Offense.

2011's Defense & Mathieu ruined him. Thinking he can be vanilla on defense & still win it because of the defense or a big special teams play.

think the combination of Lee and 2008 plus the uber conservative yet successful 2011 season essentially was the dagger for Miles and modern offenses.
I think it started before 2011, but 2011 studs masked the offensive issues. 2011 offense looked like 2009-2010.

You could look at 11-5-11 and the way we won that game.Quintessential "Les Miles formula" except our ST is garbage since he brought back the bbq grandmaster

that doesn't disprove my point that people love working for him.
I am sure it is easier to work for Miles than a coach like Saban. But more gratifying working for Saban.

The talent level on the 2011 team could have won with any scheme. True coaching ability shines through when you have success with talent that is on par or less than your opposition.

So out of 20 assistants, the OC usually doesn't like working with Miles because he's too hands on.
Ok, that doesn't disprove my point that people love working for him.
The offensive staff likes to get paid and have a job, but Miles drives them nuts.
I really couldn't tell you much about the defense but I assume they've got no qualms.

It's weird.
as miles has aged, so has his offense. he trusted his qb's circa 06/07 and likely regrets it in 08.
he's slowly pulled his trust reigns back every single year since then.
One can argue that as his QB's become more seasoned, then his trust in them grows...you saw it with JJ/JL in 2011, and then Mett in 2013.
Which is why the last 2.05 years has been so baffling, considering that Harris is going into his 3rd year under Miles/Cameron yet is still being coddled like a true freshman...which makes it all even more frustrating considering that there are so many frosh/redshirt frosh being unleashed across the country.

That was really only evident with Mett in 2013, and even then, we threw the ball less in 2013 than we did in 2012.
In 2008, 2009, 2010, and 2011 we threw the ball 44%, 43.5%, 35.9%, and then 32% of the time, respectively.
In 2012 we threw it 40.3% of the time and in 2013 we threw it 38.3% of the time.
30.7% of the time in 2014

This is likely true. But, while you're baffled by him with BH, I'm baffled by how a guy who is terrified of QBs when they aren't upper classmen jacks up QB recruiting. I don't mean WHO he gets.
I mean, you can't fricking skip 2 years of even bringing in a legit SEC caliber QB. We skipped a year and then brought in ONE guy who was borderline 2-3 star.
You almost have to thank God that BH might have a rough year because if he went off and then turned pro, we'd be back to Miles rolling out a 2 star guy or a RS Freshman. Miles would shite the bed ANOTHER two years if that happened.

Yep.
JL put up decent numbers, but, we played as if the forward pass was the equivalent of Freddie Kruger.

but maybe it was the 2007 Florida game that ruined him. Making five fourth and short conversions by ramming it down Florida's throat, and all the plaudits he got for it
Probably has that video rolling 24/7 on a project in his game room.

He's not recruited the QB position worth a damn. If BH can't complete the passes in practice how can u expect him to call them on Saturday.???? The positions capabilities dictate what u will be successful running. If all u can do is run it then u try and run it. Buck stops w him and his un QB friendly offense

For shits and giggles:
41.4% in 2005, 45% in 2006, and 41.9% in 2007.

2014 is where it reached a boiling point., IMO.

Miles has gotten to where Cholly Mack was in many ways.
Nice guy
Good winning %
BUT
could not win the BIG ONES.
and is some ways for the same reson.
Cholly .. the game passed him by in style
Miles has held on to his old views and Bo Schembechler ... letting the game pass him by.

I won't really get into this much other than to say that I know this to be false on the offensive side of the ball, specifically because of this...
This is why I don't get these quotes from one of our latest hires.
quote:
“In your career, you have personal goals and you have team goals for yourself,”
quote:
I’ve always set those as a player and as a coach, and you just want to see growth and development in your career on and off the field. That was part of the reason for coming here. Getting the chance to work with Coach [Les] Miles is definitely not a lateral move.
Only thing I can see is that this was a translation of him wanting to run from a sinking ship.
