ETA: this will NEVER happen in America. even the NHL kicks arse compared to MLS.

I find it hilarious that people are "rolling around laughing" at the notion that the most popular sport in the world is "gaining popularity" in America
Gaining popularity, sure. Passing the NBA and MLB, laughable.

Ask Joe Dean why we have a women's soccer team.

Ok, I will do everything. The following is a direct quote from the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals decision finding that LSU was violating Title IX. As you can see from the following, women's soccer had a clear advantage over men's soccer:
quote:
In addition to the district court's evaluation of LSU's attitudes as “archaic,” our independent evaluation of the record and the evidence adduced at trial supports the conclusion that Appellees persisted in a systematic, intentional, differential treatment of women. For instance, in meetings to discuss the possibility of a varsity women's soccer team, Dean referred to Lisa Ollar repeatedly as “honey,” “sweetie,” and “cutie” and negotiated with her by stating that “I'd love to help a cute little girl like you.” Dean also opined that soccer, a “more feminine sport,” deserved consideration for varsity status because female soccer players “would look cute running around in their soccer shorts.”

yeah.. i thought and said this in the 90's when US made their biggest world cup push yet and MLS started. 15 years later. pretty much the same.
Soccer was supposed to overtake all the major sports about 20 years ago. We see how that's gone.

Title ix really is out dated, i argued against in one of my classes a while back, i was met with forve wit the female athletes in my class. I mean really a school like LSU isnt going to give up a female program for mens soccer, yet they give up mens soccer for lack of another female program.
This holds true for any mens team at any school even on the high school level.

not until elite players are in the US
you think they aren't? Theres just no infrastructure for them. When the popularity of it rises, some of America's elite athletes will start playing and America will dominate the world like other popular sports.

American elite athletes have much better things to do than play soccer. There's more money to be made playing the American Big 3 than playing soccer. shite, you can prolly make more turning keez in Watts than you can make playing soccer in America.

While it is true that the majority of players do not get paid large amounts of money, I would like to point out the 6th highest paid player in america plays soccer. Obviously some people are getting paid to play. You can make a lot of money playing soccer.

Yes. But Beckham in a way is a bad example of soccer's popularity in America. Particularly because that's what he's NOT. His popularity was established before he played for an American team. In fact, the reason he was signed on over here to the LOS ANGELES (2nd largest media market in USA) Galaxy was to increase the popularity of the sport. I mean, his incentives are unheard of almost. He's supposed to be a trailblazer for popularizing American soccer because he's an established brand.
