Saban's record was mediocre at Michigan State until his fifth and final year when the Spartans went 9-2. Saban had faced LSU in 1995 Independence Bowl and his team raced out to a 24-3 second quarter lead only to be overwhelmed from then on in a 45-26 LSU win. I thought Saban pursued the LSU job because at had experienced the quality of players on the LSU team and was aware Louisiana produced a large number of NFL players in relationship to its population. He was aware that Louisiana had better high school talent than Michigan and he would not have a powerful in-state rival like the Wolverines to face on the recruiting trail.

to answer the question explicitly, NOTHING really stood out about Saban other than he was basically all we had

we were interested in Mark Richt, interviewed Glen Mason and Phil Bennet, and were ready to offer Butch Davis but he backed out before an offer could be made...Dean claimed he was ready to spend some money but needed the right guy and we didn't have him yet

I think Mack Brown may have also been in the conversation

Sean Touhy from New Orleans knew Joe Dean from the basketball world (Touhy played at Vandy if I recall) and Touhy was in business with Jimmy Sexton who represented Saban. Touhy, possibly at Sexton's direction, called Dean to pitch Saban's name...Dean looked not because Saban was a hot name but because we were completely floundering in our search

Sexton floated 1.2 million and Dean was shocked at that high of a number...he had to get approval from Emmert who had to get approval from above...it was definitely Emmert who made the decision to spend the money cause Dean wanted to try to negotiate...Emertt knew we couldn't lose Saban cause there was only slim pickens behind him

He was 49-50, and fiery. He had a coaching staff, in many cases, that acted like him.

He was a giant killer at MSU. Would beat Penn State, Michigan, etc big boys of the time at a university where he probably shouldn’t.

Saban was 43-26-1 versus Melvin's 16-13 record (about to be 16-14). Saban had one of top defenses in Big 10 Tucker's Mich St defense is 10th out of 14 in scoring defense in Big 10 and 14th out of 14 in total defense!

Not similiar at all.

This is playing with the numbers, Saban had one 9-2 season at Toledo 5 years before he got the MSU job, his first 4 seasons at MSU he was 25-22.

While Tucker has a much shorter coaching resume they are very similar in the fact that they both had a breakout season at MSU (Saban 9-2 and Tucker 9-1 to date), both had significant NFL and college coaching experience, and were/are highly recommended in the coaching community from current coaches and football lifers. So I would say a lot of similarities...

Saban was far from a sure thing. Dinardo and LSU beat his butt in the Indy bowl. Many asked " who is this Yankee " ? Turned out he started a 20 year run of glory for us.

I remember listening conference call the night he was hired. The hosts said he was very well respected among NFL people and we would be happy w. Him.

You’re right. I said Tex Schramm but it was GilBrandt. Joe Dean asked him for a recommendation.

Sexton convinced Mark Emmeret that Nick Saban was a diamond in the rough and was worth an interview for the HC vacancy. Emmeret, knowing the revenue potential of LSU Football and needing to compete with Tide Pride made the bold request to the powers that be to offer Saban the job and pay him an unprecedented $2M. The east suites were built, LSU had gone full on corporate sponsorship with TAF controlling the purse strings and a new era of LSU FB was launched. But it was the visionary Mark Emmeret behind it all launching Saban.

Joe Dean asked Tex Schram, retired Dallas Cowboys GM, and he recommended Saban

We had a brilliant man in Mark Emmertt. He was smart enough to realize that Joe Dean was a windbag, so he hijacked the process, realized Saban was the man, and arranged it so Dean could not screw it up.

It was Emmett’s hire and I’m sure Woodward was doing some behind the scenes research at the time
Dean was told that in no way would he be running this search

The game they played against Notre Dame his last year coaching at Michigan State. They had a good Notre Dame team on the ropes you could tell by his demeanor on the sidelines he was a winner. They were the underdog had his team fired up the whole game and they should have won it.

Never had a losing season was a big selling point !

Besides his NFL background and defensive mind !!
