Of course Miles had his deficiencies, but he did have some great moments.

Towards the end special teams were not very special.

It was not really a trick play, but Saban called an onside kick at the opening kickoff at the 2001 Auburn vs. LSU game. LSU went on to defeat a favored Auburn team.

My favorite was the tight end reverse on 4th down against Bama in 2010.

The background behind that one made it so sweet:

2 years before- Tuberville and thugs lighting up cigars.

Right before kickoff- Auburn being Auburn and a coordinated team “stomp” on the Eye of the Tiger, resulting on 15 yards on opening kickoff. They never knew what hit them after 4 quarters.

I know they are fun but trick plays on special teams reek of desperation.

Do they? I found that Miles did a lot of these trick plays in situations that weren’t obvious/expected. Which is why I think they usually worked for him. You often see teams do these trick plays in the 4th quarter when they absolutely need to keep the ball to stay in the game, now that reeks of desperation. This season, LSU gave up a fake punt to I think Arkansas late in the game and it was so painfully obvious that a fake was in play since they would basically concede the game by punting the ball away. That one drove me crazy that the coaches weren’t looking for the fake.
