I think the personal issues didn't help, but mostly, he's a total fraud, he got lucky with Burrow and Brady. He made the reckless decision to hire Bo Pelini without an interview, then claimed the defense looked better than the season prior.
He has no idea what he's doing and he was exposed.
On top of that, there were the off the field issues--most experienced winning coaches know how to handle success, and are aware that sustaining a winning program is a whole other animal.

When he lost the two smartest people associated with the program: Aranda and Brady and replaced them with two dinosaurs.
Amazing that in just weeks, he forgot everything that got him to the top and reverted right back to hiring good ole boys well past their prime.
No one and I mean NO ONE was looking at Pelini and Linehan at elite programs...Yet, Ed thought they were the right hires.

No. He hired Matt Canada sight unseen with apparently NO clue on what kind of offense Matt ran. Then, he couldn't get along with him and fired him.
The same Matt Canada who is OC for the Steelers. The Steeler's offense is 15th in the league, in spite of an offensive line that ranks second to last in the league. So apparently, the dude knows how to get some offensive production in spite of a poor O-line. Not like he couldn't coach or something. Maybe he was/is an asshat, but if I'm a CEO coach, then I can smooth a lot of that over as long as the dude produces. Apparently, O couldn't.
You can shite on Coach O all you want, it’s warranted. But Matt Canada sucks too. No one in Pittsburgh is happy with him and he will be gone after this year

100% agree. He has lost all focus and it ain’t coming back. Bye O. ASAP.

But what happened with that divorce. In 2019 espn ran a special about how he was a family man and how he stood by her side during her health issues where she almost died. Now he divorced her and is chasing after women. It just makes no sense. in 2019 after every game she went to hug him after every game. Was that all fake?

Rolling from a championship into huge turnover and Covid and social justice stuff. Where normally you have a spring soon after a championship to develop chemistry and leaders, you got nothing. Summer rolled around and you had the campus march and all that. The Pelini and Linehan hires were godawful.
It’s been a series of missteps and errors since the championship, and some flat out bad luck.

Most of what we see people say on Facebook or to reporters on ESPN is not true. It's some mixture of what people wish were true and what they think other people expect of them.
This is true for regular people and amplified for people with more money or attention

Stop, man. Just stop.

he was headed this direction from the get go. If you go back to 2017 and the spring of 2018 it was trending bad, the projections for that season was 6-6, 7-5. He staved it off by getting Burrow, he was lucky a guy like Burrow was available but he was and O got him so he gets the credit for that and hiring Brady, but you can't build on that and now its back to where we were headed without those guys.
Be thankful he got us the greatest season we will ever see

Not saying Canada is the greatest, but he's dealing with a creaky QB at the end of his career and a very poor O-line. But MC didn't form that situation. He's driving an old beater that he got tossed the keys to.
O's dealing with the players he recruited and the staff he hired - a lot of it haphazardly. A bit of a different situation.

In the offseason after 2019, lost these (20) contributors:
Joe Burrow
Kristian Fulton
Justin Jefferson
Jacob Phillips
Grant Delpit
Patrick Queen
Stephen Sullivan
Racey McMath
K’Lavon
Derrick Dillon
CEH
Michael Divinity
Damien Lewis
Adrian Magee
Badara Traore
Sadiq Charles
Lloyd Cushenberry
Thad Moss
Rashard Lawrence
Fehoko
If that wasn’t chaotic enough, the instability really went into motion when these next two things happened:
January 15, 2020; Carolina Panthers hire Joe Brady
January 16, 2020; Baylor University hires Dave Aranda
Since that point, LSU has had these players either opt out, or leave the program:
Ja’Marr Chase
Tyler Shelvin
Kary Vincent
Arik Gilbert
Marcel Brooks
Terrace Marshall
Dare Rosenthal
Apu Ika
Maurice Hampton
Among others

PM completely lost focus and fire after his.
What BS, he was a Top 8 seed 6 consecutive years a starting in 2012, that's 3 years after his title, he only "stagnated" post 2017 and even then still made 2 Supers, including hosting one

Chase and Marshall were going pro after 2020 regardless, so if you want to use that as a factor for the terrible season last year fine but not this year

The Troy loss. Burrow fell in his lap and bought him a new contract and a couple of extra seasons. 2018 would've been a bad season had he not landed Burrow.

There is no spiral. He is who we thought he was.
Jeaux Burreaux was good enough to overcome the black hole of suckage.
