The original post is off but you've gone too far the other way. LSU has rarely thrown its ace in the opening game of the four team regional format. It is typically the 2 or lower depending on the matchup.

depending on who the 4 seed is, I can see throwing Walker against the 4 and then Lange and Poche to finish it off

any way you want to play it, LSU is looking to be done in 3 games with the regional

At this point it's almost set in stone Walker is going to start the Friday regional game. He's turning into a rock solid number 3 pitcher. Then Saturday and Sunday will be some combo of Poche and Lange. Lange or Poche will not pitch on Friday for the clown in here.

Itll likely be poche or walker

Let's see how Hess does vs a Tuesday opponent first.

Then why did Florida start Faedo last year against the 4 seed powerhouse Bethune Cookman? Why did LSU start Poche against the 4 seed powerhouse Utah Valley last year? Why did TCU start their ace Traver last year against 4 seed powerhouse Sacred Heart?

We started Alden Cartwright and went Johnny Wholestaff against Lehigh in game 1 a couple of years ago.

The strategy changes from year to year depending on (1) who the #4 seed is and (2) what our pitching depth looks like.

Last year, it was clear we didn't have a solid #3, so Mainieri's only option was to start Poche against #4 seed Utah Valley.

We've already lost to UNO (twice) and McNeese this year. You can bet that Mainieri won't take any #4 seed lightly. Dropping a home regional opener would pretty much kill any chance to advance.

We're not wasting Poche or Lange on the 4 seed.

Getting a win in a postseason game can hardly be considered "wasting" a starter.

Only way I would start Hess on opening day of regional is if you play a SWAC opponent.
The bullpen is what concerns me in regionals, better hope Newman is healthy and back by May.

Depends on the matchup. If the LSU 4-seed is a good in-state school, I'm throwing Lange Game 1.

Lange, Poche, Walker, Bain (if available), Hess

If it's a SWAC or SoCon school I'm throwing Hess or Bain.

Hess, Poche, Lange, Walker

In Regional Play --

You pitch your #2 in Game 1.
Win that game and pitch your Ace in the winner's bracket game.
Win that game and someone has to beat you twice.

In Super Regional Play --
This is easy.

You pitch your #1 in Game 1.
If you win, you can afford to hang on to your #2 until the "if necessary game".
