Some of the people on here are acting like we should have a statue of him on campus and that he should be on the Mt. Rushmore of LSU QB’s. That’s simply not true.

No one said he was elite. He was, however, better than Brandon Harris and the like, a great ambassador, tough and competent, and held the team together.

In a world of Heisman winners, championship or bust, and "when I go to the league" atmosphere, he was just a darned good team football player and from the QB position no less. Greatest talent? No. Quintessential tiger? Yea.

If he was anything more, we don't get housed by BAMA @ Bama in 2017.

That was a pretty competitive game. Defense was solid.

He was not an elite QB by any stretch of the imagination. He was serviceable during his time here. Nothing more, nothing less.

Far better than just serviceable. Etling was the best QB between Flynn and Burrow, and that includes Mett.

While Harris did regress, his 2015 season is damn near the same as Etling's 2017 season.

Well, that's just not true at all. Nobody is saying Etling is an all-time LSU QB, but his 2017 season was pretty damn good. Completed 60% of his passes for 2,463 yards with 16 TDs and only 2 interceptions. Added another 2 TDs rushing. His 153 passer rating was 3rd best in the SEC that year, and his 9 yards/attempt also was 3rd best in the SEC this year and 9th in the nation. His adjusted yards/attempt was 9.8 which ranked 2nd in the SEC and 6th in the NCAA that year. Hell, his combined 2 year y/a at LSU is 8.4 and ranks 23rd best in the SEC since 1956. His adjusted y/a was 8.8 and ranks 21st in SEC history since 1956.

Harris and Jennings and the like weren't putting up numbers like that. Etling wouldn't be on LSU's Mount Rushmore of QBs if it had 10 faces, but the OP--who is just dumb as all frick--is the one who's revising history. Etling wasn't "average" or "serviceable." Certainly not by LSU standards. Dude had a pretty productive 2 years here and was a tough SOB. And literally was the bridge to Burrow.

Sorry but I don’t get the significance of this subject. He might have been better if the O-line had been as well.

Damn, what an odd thing to have on your mind. And I dont think I have ever read anything where folks mention Etling as elite.

what he gave us in mid 2016-2017 was nothing short of a breath of fresh air compared to our qb play between the years of 2014-early 2016

Etling played kinda like Case Keenum. Decent in college, somehow hung around in the NFL.

Not a bad life.

Etling played very well for us when we had no other good options. Harris completely busting out in 2016 could have killed that season. By the end, we were beating a top 10 louisville team by 3 touchdowns.

Far from perfect but I understand why he is remembered fondly.
