old classic bowls were played after the final polls and national champs were announced. they truly were "exhibition games"

1) We still hold on to the old meaning of classic bowls that just don't exist anymore. It still feels like they are, but decisions like Greedy's and others prove that they aren't really worth it. 2) While meaningless in the overall picture, they still have some effect on the idea of the quality of a team and the win/loss record. But any non-playoff team winning or losing a bowl doesn't really gain or suffer from much outside of a slightly lower/higher end of year ranking. In short, bowls are certainly not as meaningful/exciting as they used to be, but are just better mapped to a another game in the season, adding to the win/loss record.

Unless you are top 4, the Bowls mean the same thing as they always have which is to determine your rank amongst the Top 25. In the BCS Era a couple bowls would be the significant ones to determine the champ and now we have 2 bowls and a final that do that.

It really hasn't changed much. There are a few games that are there to determine the champ, there are the "prestigious bowls" like Orange, Fiesta, Sugar and Cotton and then the others which have grown way too much.

Bowls matter plenty to UCF's coaches, players, and fans

FIFY!
And apparently not as much to some/or one LSU player, so far. Not a knock on Greedy-- he is making the best decision for himself. I have yet to hear that any UCF player is sitting it out. Perhaps they do not have nearly as much to lose.

It’s a bit circular though because every loss means a worse bowl game, a game I put more value in than you do.

Sure, but it's still the least meaningful of any on the schedule. That's why these arguments about why Greedy didn't sit out the Rice game are goofy. Losing to Rice is very impactful. Losing in the Fiesta bowl? Not so much.

Uh, there is a thing called the playoffs and LSU isn’t in it. Thus, bowls are meaningless as you aren’t playing in a championship, but rather are participating in a financial arrangement involving a scrimmage game.

Yes, other guys get reps and teams have chances to achieve milestone victories in a season, play in exotic locations, non traditional rivals, etc. However, the game has no meaning as the teams aren’t playing for a championship.

Please tell me which game on the schedule is less important than the Fiesta bowl?

What loss is the least impactful - the 12 regular season games or a non-playoff bowl game?

How about what win has the most impact? Beating 1-11 Rice, 2-10 Arkansas, or the Fiesta Bowl? Beating Arkansas and Rice didn't affect our ranking or conference standing one bit.

The last game the potential recruits will see. Likely a game that has a national broadcast.

Let me ask you a question......

If LSU wins or losses against UCF will it have a more meaningful impact than the Texas A&M, or RICE game did?

Bowls are just as meaningless as every other college football game.

i would also argue that the outcome of the bowl is meaningless to the overall direction of the program.

"no recruit is going to go... they went to tempe... AND LOST?!! frick that i'm going elsewhere."

Ding ding ding. The opposite is also true. We aren't going to flip recruits or add recruits because of the win.

Umm..... What? Beating Arkansas help LSU improve their conference ranking. Without it LSU would have finished even worse in the conference. I'd also be willing to bet the house that a loss to UCF in the Fiesta Bowl doesn't hurt LSU in the rankings as much as a lost to rice at home does.

Bowls are not meaningless so long as they represent an opportunity to show off the merit of your team against the best teams in the country at the end of the season. Typically an out of conference team, you would not have an opportunity to play against. It also helps rankings and recruiting if you win.
Granted bowls have become more anachronistic b/c tv coverage has expanded so you get a chance to so most all the best teams, travel to an exotic city is overrated and some players now pack it in for the bowl.
In LSU's case, it is chance to showcase the team in Az. and solidify a top ten finish.

No, not at all.

If I told you LSU was going to go 2-1 vs A&M, Rice, and a NY6 opponent, what game would you be able to stomach the best?

We played Rice in November this year, bucko. Go ahead and try to spin that as being more meaningful than a NY6 bowl game against an undefeated opponent with an opportunity for LSU to crack 10 wins and get exposure in a media market we never play in.

Bowls are the punctuation at the end of the season. It's both an embodiment of your season's work, and the final grade that defines your season. I agree than these bowl games are important.

I also love playing "exotic" opponents.

On this season? I'd say the Fiesta Bowl is still the least impactful.

At the end of the day I'm not really shitting on the Fiesta Bowl - it's a nice reward for a solid season - I just don't think it matters to this current season as much as the rest of the games on the schedule.

If you could only beat one team, Rice or UCF, which would you chose?
