Vision insurance isn't even necessary to see an eye doctor. My experience is that it's filed with your health insurance, and Vision only helps if you're getting glasses, contacts, etc. We carried vision insurance on my kids for a couple of years until we realized that we're basically paying $150/year to get a $150 allowance on glasses/contacts that we may or may not need every year, so we cancelled it.

The crazy part is that medical, dental, and vision is all covered under Medicaid.

Vision insurance is basically prepaying for your contacts every year. If you actually need glasses, you still got to pay out of pocket a ton. I do dental insurance because there are some actual expensive procedures at a dentist. I pay cash for contacts. Order them from Canada for cheap.

Exactly. If you get something like conjunctivitis, you need health insurance for that.

Health should cover your entire body.

That's like buying a car and you hve to buy the keys, doors, windows, tires, rims separately. Like wtf

The scam is health insurance making you pay premiums as if it actually saves you money, while doctors can just inflate their prices as they cash in on your policy.

I don't understand why everyone thinks the middle man is worth it when they provide 0 value to the process.

Just to emphasize this, vision and dental are not actually insurance. Insurance pays for an uncertain future event. Vision and dental are certain. That's why they are treated differently.

Health insurance covers doctors.
Dentists aren’t real doctors.

I don't think anyone really thinks that insurance companies are doing them any favors with every day medical expenses, but I do think that most people (like myself) are very afraid of a major medical event (car accident, heart attack, cancer, etc) that will costs hundreds of thousands of dollars if you don't have insurance, and 'only' tens of thousands if you do have it.

One of my co-workers has a son that got bit by a snake. He got 6 vials of anti-venom in the ER and each vial costs somewhere around $20,000.

You are thinking of the old way insurance was handled.

ACA beefed up and mandated preventative coverages.

Old insurance, you could pick and choose the type of plan that you had.
Now (from my employer's perspective), I can choose a high deductible or low deductible plan. But both plans are forced to carry "certain" provisions on the health insurance.

It is one of the many reasons why insurance spiked after ACA.
