I pretty much pull for all Louisiana teams when not playing LSU. That said, there were a couple of years where a bunch of baws from Lafayette came to the Box bent on starting shite in the stands, and that is where a lot of the distaste came from. One of my good friends and teammates in high school was one of the best players to come through the ULL program, so I don't actively root against them, but some of their fans illicit a lot of eye rolls.

That said, their fans and Southern fans probably make up the largest segment of Alabama "fans" in south Louisiana, which is despicable.

I’m not saying ULL has done anything with sports. I’m saying they’re jealous and they wish they could be LSU. I grew up an LSU fan and I always noticed how jealous ULL fans are of LSU especially when it comes to baseball

I've attended both universities. (Currently in grad school at LSU)

It's a mix between Cajun fans rooting for their team while being somewhat jealous of the athletic success at LSU just down the road. On top of that LSU fans looove to shite on UL. I had a prof at UL tell a story about how her friends were hit with piss balloons the last time the Cajuns played in tiger stadium (lol). She also would criticize people who wore LSU gear to class. So yea, there is some animosity there.

What I don't get is why LSU feels the need to say ULL all the time other than it ruffles people's feathers. Officially, they are the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, but they never use the acronym ULL. It's about branding. If you apply the rule to make them ULL then that same rule means I go to LSU A&M. Obviously ridiculous and branding would never allow it.

I moved to Lafayette over 35 years ago after graduating from LSU...I remember being surprised by the attitude of the local UL graduates regarding the Tigers...deep seeded hatred stemming from what I thought was a combination of jealousy, envy and bitterness...you combine that with a historical hatred of anyone born north of I-10 and you have quite the witches brew…I will never forget when ULaLa faced LSU in the Super Regional back in 2002…the passion was so thick at those games that you could almost cut it with a knife…in fact I think a cajun fan actually pulled a knife at the regional final but quickly put it away after a LSU fan showed him a gun…LSU swept them 12-2, 12-2…it was a long hot ride back to Lafayette for sure.

Someone can correct me if I’m wrong. But I believe the hatred goes back at least to 1984. That year, the legislature approved USL changing the name to University of Louisiana. Signs on campus and at the stadiums were changed. Shortly thereafter, a highly influential LSU faction pushed through a reversal of that decision. The signs came down and it really pissed them off. I personally was ok with the name change. It would not have changed anything with LSU remaining the flagship school. It would have helped USL beef up it’s already (at the time) excellent computer science, engineering and nursing programs.

USL received approval from the Board of Regents to change its name from USL to UL. The other state universities protested, so the legislature passed a law thru reversing the name change. USL filed a lawsuit and the court ruled against them. LSU got most of the blame ( due to the LSU flagship clause in the law )and many ULL supporters are still bitter.

Most of the time opposing fans pull for the other team, except when playing each other. Like the family dynamic, "you can't call my sister names or hit her bit I can, cause she is my sister". In the end most of us come together. It's a family thing.

I’ve had people tell me that the name change would “demean” LSU.
Well, my response was if a name of another school demeans your school, you have a lot more issues within your school than just a name.

Could it be because it's actually LSU fans that start the whole argument about UL-ULL-USL naming rights? Genuinely asking. Always seems that those arguments start because of an LSU fan pointing out that their name is incorrect.

Or maybe it's because I grew up with it being USL, so I have always called it USL. The people that go/went to USL then want to point out that you are wrong, thus making a big deal out of it.

My dad, born and raised in Laffy, still says hes an USL alumnus. So ill just stick with that.

ULL/USL became the University of Louisiana around the same time the Mall of Louisiana opened

If you’re starting a thread to discuss the ridiculousness of the Cajun and Tigers hate, maybe you shouldn’t refer to ULL as ULaLa.

They haven’t been USL since 1999. Stop living in the past.

Engineering excellence ???

In the 70's, I had USL engineering graduate working for me that had no idea how to calculate the area of a circle. The other engineers said he thought PI is round not square. He didn't understand what they meant when they were kidding him.

USL excellence ?????
