Not really. Miles could NOT have done what Saban did had he come in 2000..........

How are you typing with Sabans balls all over your face? Get it out your mouth. Go home, you're drunk.

I lose respect for posters who insist that a coach fired after two consecutive losing seasons, including a 1-7 SEC record in his final year, "laid the foundation" for a decade of LSU dominance

He laid the foundation. Period. When he got Kevin Faulk to sign, the fence around Louisiana talent began to go up. Absent Faulk, the rebuilding just doesn't happen. Top Louisiana talent would continue to slip out. Faulk's signing opened the flood gatges to Louisiana talent remaing home. Dinardo was a crappy coach, granted but his contribution to LSU football wasn't all bad.

Any rational person (not in love with any particular coach) can see that.

That's conjecture and your opinion, but not a very sound one considering OSU had one winning season in the 12 years before Miles, had played in one bowl game in the 13 years before Miles, and had a 3-20 record against Oklahoma in their last 23 games .

Miles gave OSU three straight winning years, three straight bowl games, and a 2-2 record against Oklahoma.

If Miles could do that at OSU, what would have prevented him from doing what Saban did?

My conjecture is as good as yours.

I felt the same about both of them, they were each very whelming when they happened.

I never said it was a no brainer. BUT LOOK at what he did to bring LSU to where it is still at today. Yes Miles has helped that, but Saban laid the foundation............... FACT.....

Wait...what was the original question? Was it which hire was more important...or what were your thoughts on the hires...meaning what were your thoughts on the hires when they were hired?

At the time, he was a coach with potential. Many people around LSU openly complained about his having no SEC ties...that he was just some Big 10 coach. These complaints lingered all the way through the terrible loss to Ole Miss at home in 2001.

Looking back, it was the most important hire LSU has made in decades...but no one knew it at the time. There was a shite ton of hope, but it wasn't founded on anything other than that...hope.

The Miles hire was scrutinized more harshly by LSU fans, because for the first time most of their lives LSU had reached the top and the next hire needed to be top notch. Miles did not feel like that hire at the time.

I'd say in hindsight both turned out great.

Saban- cautious optimism; like others have noted, Dinardo stopped the trend of LSU sliding into an Ole Miss level of obscurity, and I hoped that Saban would pull us back into an 8-win level of respectability (like Dinardo's earlier years).

That's all any of us could hope for- 8 wins, an occasional upset of a top 10 team.

Miles- I was stunned and a bit disappointed. I didn't think he could keep us ranked.

Both FAR exceeded expectations, but Miles faced the tougher criticism.
