DiNardo laid the foundation. Saban expanded the foundation and Miles built on that.........................FACT

If not for the Miles results in the last eight years, the Saban time at LSU wouldn't mean shite today.

Beating Bama (or OSU) would have put Les in rarefied company and arguably the best NCAA season ever !
AGAIN. A BIG IF....... LSU would have beaten OSU[IMO] But could NOT beat the OTHER coach we are talking about when it mattered most...........

when saban was hired I thought to myself, there is no way someone is going to start a thread about this 14 years later. pleasant surprise

You make a valid point. Prior to Saban, LSU had NEVER won a national championship nor had EVER finished in the top ten.

IF Miles had failed How does that mean ANYTHING to what Saban did here.........
You said LSU is where it is TODAY because of what Saban started here ten years ago.
LSU is more where it is TODAY due to Miles a hell of a lot more than it is to a coach who bailed almost a decade ago.

I lose respect for posters who insist that a coach fired after two consecutive losing seasons, including a 1-7 SEC record in his final year, "laid the foundation" for a decade of LSU dominance. Semnatics aside, it is abundantly clear that the turning point in the history of modern LSU football was the hiring of Saban. Any rational observer would agree.

Honestly I had no real opinion of Saban. I knew he was a ok coach and had some mild success at Michigan State. I also knew that NFL higher ups were high on him. But this was the same guy that got bitch slapped by Gerry Dinardo in the Indy Bowl. So there really wasn't much opinion on him, most took the wait and see attitude. I wasn't very high on the Miles hire. I thought LSU could have done better at the time. But obviously this wasn't the case. The timing of Saban leaving kinda screwed LSU over. LSU was the last school that was looking for a coach that year. But obviously it has worked out to have a great hire.

I never said it was a no brainer. BUT LOOK at what he did to bring LSU to where it is still at today. Yes Miles has helped that, but Saban laid the foundation............... FACT.....
my goodness.....saban has very little to do with LSU today--at some point you got to let it go...it was saban's desire and emerrit's willingness to improve the facilities which made us competitive within the conference. LSU was not bare when he arrived. our success had more to do with the university not buying coaches and supporting the program on the cheap
saban is a very good coach, but the Bear is due all the credit for the success at Bama becuz he laid the foundation---FACT

Never heard of either one at the time. Saban was 8 or 9 on the list as I recall. Dont recall gruden being mentioned but Butch Davis definitely was.
I was pissed that Saban waited so late to jilt us, do we couldn't get a "name".
Worked out OK, much better than the archer, hallman hires....

when saban was hired 14 years ago, i thought to myself, why don't i set up an internet talk board to discuss this with other smart, level headed, very good lookin', (non-rant-types) mature, men.
i only thought of this b/c if someone like chicken started a board like mine, he would allow a lot of low-life, ignorant, dumb, rantards post to their heart's content.
i was lazy and really didn't understand the internet.
thank gawd for chicken!

Not really. Miles could NOT have done what Saban did had he come in 2000..........

DiNardo stopped the slow but steady player loss to out of state schools which had partly resulted in a six year LSU record before his arrival of 25-41.
While he failed in totally bringing the program back to respectability, he had a four year record of 33-24 and helped put LSU back in play recruiting wise within the state.
No one says he's the coach Nick is, but Nick was lucky he came after GN rather than after CH.

I was very worried about the Bill Belichick hire when it happened. Granted I was 12, but I was like the Browns were terrible.
