There were two that I remember -- 2002 Moo State and 1994 Texas A&M.

This process is hard to achieve; I believe the only way it can be accomplished is if the team which wins the toss defers, and the other team CHOOSES to kick off. And I'm pretty sure that's what happened both times-- under Curley Hallman, and later Nick Saban, respectively the worst and best coach in LSU history.

It literally happened twice dickbag. Under Curly and under Les.

Horrible game. First game of Camp Curley; literally kicked off the most abysmal era in LSU football history. Emblematic of the Tiger woes that afternoon was a wide open pass for a touchdown dropped by tight end Harold Bishop in the early 4th quarter. Tigers trailed 3-31, and Bishop was seriously injured, and out for the season on the play.

Why? You should be expected to know the rules. If the other team defers to make their decision til the second half then you better choose the ball.Otherwise, you are going to give them the ball twice. It is a simple rule that everyone should know. Like don’t hold or don’t jump offsides.

When you win the toss, you can pick your option or defer to the second half. I thought he chose to kick to start the game losing LSUs option for the second half. Kinda like ot when you can choose the ball or the side of the field when you win the toss.

What are you talking about Willis?????

Whoever wins the toss tells the ref if they want to choose now OR DEFER.

If you opt to choose now, and THEN tell the ref you want to kick, the opponent has the option to start the second half.

If (and it's pretty motherflucking likely) they choose to receive after halftime, you would have INDEED kicked off both halves, and it would be most certainly ALLOWED.

did he chose to kick after the other team deferred? If you chose to kick after winning toss I thought that’s when you chose field and the other team gets ball second half.

LSU won the toss. Bradie says, “we’ll kick”, thereby exercising LSU’s right to choose. When the second half began, the other team got to exercise their right to choose and they chose to receive.

The bottom line is that each team gets the right to choose once. If you win the toss you get to make your choice in the first half; and again, you can choose to kick, receive or defer your choice to the second half. Bradie should have said “we want to defer”, but instead said, “we want to kick”.

It happened to LSU.

What happened was that we won the toss, and the captain elected to "kick the ball" instead of deferring.

If you defer, the other team gets to decide, and they 99.9% choose to receive; hence you kick off.
If you choose to kick, you've made your decision and the other team gets to decide on the 2nd half. They then choose to receive... which means you kick off both halves.

And alternatively, there could be other reasons too.

It's hard to fathom in this era of football where offenses are so potent, but go back to the Saban/early Miles years. Phenomenal defenses paired with conservative running offenses.

Hypothetically, you kick off, force a quick 3 and out, get the ball around the 40 or even midfield if you get a short punt or a decent return. That way, a 30 yd drive could get you a field goal.

Go back and look at the "game of the century" between LSU and Bama, that we won 9-6 in OT. Both teams were comfortable with letting the other team have the ball around the 20, because nobody was going to drive. It took major effort just to flip the field that game.
